I think it's not right to say *even* die-hard fans are pissed. I think *only* die-hard fans are pissed. I think casual fans will like this release. They won't have all those mixes. Say Jacques luCont was to release a CD of his mixes. I would very much like that, I don't have all of 'm on CD. But his die-hard fans would probably moan. I'm looking forward to D4, and looking forward to the new version of Integral!

hmmm...perhaps you're right. we're mostly upset that there's nothing new except for the integral mix. even still, the tracklisting could have been much better. but i'll go ahead and rescind my initial evaluation of disco 4 that it's a steaming, wretched pile of poo. it's just a plain ol' pile of poo, after all.themalesurfer wrote:I think it's not right to say *even* die-hard fans are pissed. C'mon Ray - that's hardly the point I'm making.Ray wrote:Just checking -- you ARE aware they get paid for this?gareth wrote:In reference to your other point regarding time in the studio - they've been on their longest tour ever in case you hadn't noticed and still are. Most people have had a chance to see them in the past 12 months, many more than once. And if you didn't then you could buy Cubism - with a choice of covers subject to your own personal preference.
If they read comments like yours they must wonder why they bother.
The point is that some people expect them to have written and recorded a stack of new material while also conducting a world tour.

The Internet provides a brilliant opportunity for cheap market research. With a strong online fan presence such as that the PSB have, the band, their management or their record company could easily test the interest in potential projects, prior to actually committing to them. Or even go as far as Blur did and enlist their free help in compiling their "best of" compilation etc. The possibilities are massive - their utilisation is nil.dVTB wrote:I cannot help wondering if this is perhaps Neil's subtle response on PSB fans massively slaughtering Disco 4 on this forum? Or am I - again - being paranoid?
A lot of things have changed in business, but the customer is always right. No wonder EMI is falling off the wagon if it can't even remember this basic principle.

I wasnt expecting a stack. I did however think they would put somethin new on. theres nothing about these guys that makes me think they arent always recording something or at least have a few tracks lying around.gareth wrote:C'mon Ray - that's hardly the point I'm making.Ray wrote:Just checking -- you ARE aware they get paid for this?gareth wrote:In reference to your other point regarding time in the studio - they've been on their longest tour ever in case you hadn't noticed and still are. I think most of us enjoyed disco 3 a little too much as there was some really quality new and unreleased stuff on there that we thought a new template was born in the disco series.

Is an Elton John style anti-internet rant in the offing?dVTB wrote:There's a quite remarkable text by Neil on the official website, under Pet Texts:
The picture shows the cover of a book by Andrew Keen, called "The Cult of the Amateur", with the subtitle: "How Today's Internet is Killing Our Culture and Assaulting Our Economy". I cannot help wondering if this is perhaps Neil's subtle response on PSB fans massively slaughtering Disco 4 on this forum? Or am I - again - being paranoid?Bought this book to read on the plane. Very provocative and interesting. I first read about the author in The Guardian.

To be fair, polling their fans is the last thing they should do. Fans are maniacs and unrepresentative of the general consumer. Fans never make or break a record - there just aren't that many of them.retrofuturist wrote:The Internet provides a brilliant opportunity for cheap market research. The only way they're missing a trick with the Internet is by not establishing a download store to specifically rake in cash by selling rare and unreleased songs to fans. There's no way to monetize something like Tall Thin Men or A Little Black Dress using the traditional avenues but fans would pay a buck or two to download a high quality MP3. They could also be using the official site to sell "annuals" on CD comprised of back catalog stuff that doesn't make the grade commercially. Who here wouldn't pay $30 for a CD of 10 unreleased tracks every year?Or even go as far as Blur did and enlist their free help in compiling their "best of" compilation etc. The possibilities are massive - their utilisation is nil.

JS-P, call the Boys' PR people, I think you've just coined the ad slogan for D4.Janet Street-Porter wrote: Disco 4....it's better than Disco 2. Hoorah!
