Ghost within this house wrote: Sun 03 Mar 2024, 10:50 pm I am quietly excited. The unrelenting strobes and lasers phase grew a little wearisome by the time of Hotspot, but Hoping for a miracle and Burning the heather temporarily slaked a thirst for complex Tennant narratives dwelling inside expansive Lowe soundscapes without so much of the intrusive +8 pitchbent Price knob-twiddling...

Ford, we are told, has stripped back the electronics and turned up the strings, the iconography is imperialist, and Loneliness is a glorious slab of pop psychodrama. Parlophone will add a glossy sheen. These are all good signs.

My only fear is if there is too much indulgence and nostalgia and not enough taut, thrilling story-telling.. I hope we get a few more lyrics that are wry, detached observer/awkward protagonist, and not so many morbid dirges for lost youth and a freer world... Nostalgia is good, but in moderation!

All I do know is that, having been absolutely fine with no new PSB for four years, the arrival of Loneliness has made me obsessive and impatient...! C'mon boys, drop another one!!
There's been plenty of PSB material since Hotspot came out, more than enough for more than one album.
But the quality of it wasn't good enough.
Cricket Wife and Lost were excellent, are you always so negative? New here but every single reply I see from you makes me wonder why you're still a fan and don't just listen to their old material instead

I'm a fan but not a hardcore fan to say everthing they make is great.

I hate the depressing songs like the ones you say above. I respect they want to do that and I understand it but it's not my cup of tea.

Bear in mind they are almost in their seventies but I'm not even in my fifties. It's not the same when you are a teenager and they are in their fourties.

The ambitious of the Pet Shop Boys of the 80's is lost. The things they do now is much more predictible.

I mean if PSB started their career in 2010 or even 2000, I don't think they'd be the icons they are now. Even being young dudes.

But I know the new album is going to give us something new from PSB in some songs according to James Ford. I'm particulary interested on that, more than the usual depressing songs putting more effort in the lyrics than in the music.

Lost isn't a song, it's a 4/5 track EP and has the "depressing" songs (which is definitely the wrong word) but also more upbeat ones too. So I don't know what you mean there.

I'm 42, I am nearer your age than theirs but I can't relate to what you're saying

The point is that you're talking taste, not quality. You might not like them, but in no way is that personal taste a reflection of quality.

Their last album had Will-o-the-Wisp, Burning the Heather and Wedding in Berlin on it. You predicted that spread?

You predicted Soup?

You predicted Cricket Wife?

They're less predictable than ever before. Bless.

Well "taste" and "quality" are personal opinions, we know that but I don't believe any song from Lost could be a hit although PSB were young dudes. I don't see on it single material.

In the 80's PSB had single material on many of their songs that were not. For example, "Two dived by zero", "I want a lover", "Why don't we live togeter", "In the night", "Paninaro". Many of them have been played in their concerts because they know casual fans or general public love them. Hi-NRG songs full of filmic sounds, intros, bridges, etc.

Now they create many downtempo songs, "dreamy" tracks and more reflective themes. I know you love but it's not my cup of tea.

OK, no point carrying that on, you're too stubborn to admit you don't know what quality means. Fine. But the weirdest part is the bizarre refusal to admit any of their new music is uptempo, which a huge amount of it is.

Just from somebody new and coming into this forum, you're very draining and negative about everything. Maybe try and enjoy something in life. Won't bother you again, I popped you on block so we can both go in peace.

I like Will-o-the-Wisp but it's not something new in the sound of Pet Shop Boys. Burning the Heather is a song that could have been in Release.

I don't see anything new in the other two.

Sad songs all the way.

Nobody knows what quality means. But from my perspective and casual buyers, the early stuff was better. It's a matter of perspective and I'm saying why I think the new songs has less quality like the others.

oh my god you're so damn annoying, every single post you ever write is full of criticism and negativity, i don't understand why are you still a fan if you don't like anything post-imperial phase. trying to explain to you what quality means is like talking to wall and everyone who answered before me already did a good job so please just leave the fandom and go look for a new group to follow because psb clearly isn't for you rn

Their early stuff was more successful but not better indeed.

I understand b*nning Nickname is hard if we go strictly by the rules, but I feel like a new rule should be invented at this point. Creating thousands of threads, not even understanding English properly and being this stubborn is surely a form of disruption people have endured for far too long. We did have a person like this on the discord - talking incessantly about the 80s and refusing to even bother with anything after that, to the point of not undestanding what we were talking about when mentioning "Bilingual" and such. We don't have such an extreme example here, but you know what I mean. It's hard when the admins don't appreciate the post-Imperial era either, though.

Really? Not sure how you come to that conclusion. Either way, you've just inspired me to listen to it again and be utterly floored by its subversive power. I hope there's something this good on Nonetheless.

You can say the lyrics are better and maybe it's true but not the songs on terms of music, melodies (Suburbia, It's a Sin, Left to my own devices, etc are not comparable with anything the have done later), the production (Stuart Price is good but not as good as Trevor Horn or Julian Mendelsson), etc.

What about that cinematic sound that made me crazy?, what about the amazing intros?, what about the filmic sounds?, what about the bridges?, etc. PSB were much more dynamic, optimist and ambitious. They are older, it's not the same and I accept it but is not comparable.

More quality songs and remember they made in only 5 years (a full movie, 4 number 1 hits and other many other music masterpieces and singles, 4 albums, b-sides, extended versions, remixes, 2 amazing tours, more than 10 music videos, two albums for two big famous female stars, a single for a young female singer, a song with a gay icon for the soundtrack of a movie, two books, then "Literally", a high-scale promotion everywhere, etc). Then they created their own record company, Neil Tenant took part of a supergroup and Chris did a song for a football player.

Well, in some way Loneliness is similar to Will-o-the-Wisp. The rhythm of the song has many similarities.
