Looking forward to the new series

We had planned to air our Dreamworld episode to neatly coincide with the release of the new Pet Shop Boys Blu-ray, so the delay left us with a quandary - should we put our episode back too? It was the second we recorded of our new batch and we’d purposefully chosen it to open our new season. So, due to these “circumstances outside of our control”, we instead pulled our plans forward by a week and put it out anyway. We hope you like it.

We’ve come to realise there are two types of In Depth episode - “Graham” (me) episodes, and “Chris” episodes. Chris brings the facts and I come along with some half remembered memories from a quarter of a century ago. This division isn’t entirely true but it does occasionally help us decide who’s going to say what. Anyway, this one’s a “Graham” episode, so prepare for plenty of anecdotes from recent Dreamworld jaunts and a few flights of fancy too. This season we’ve tried to be less precious about our delivery, and the edit, with the pay-off being that hopefully the episodes flow a little easier. See if you agree!

Thanks for returning for a new season - enjoyed all the memories of Dreamworld.

I know I’ve asked before but I do wish you’d do a version without the background music. Over 80 minutes with about 45 seconds of music repeating over and over and over on headphones really messes with my head and I have to keep stopping and listening to a bit of E Smoove for some light relief (!)

Anyway - thought I’d ask again but if not I’ll try and find a bit of AI to help me!!

My 2 cents, fwiw, in my albeit brief encounter involving making movies/shows, the incidental music should compliment, not detract, from the action which can unintentionally pull you out of the moment back into the real world. If you can "hear" the incidental music, it's not doing it's job. Doctor Who a good case study.

Well, certainly. Also, everyone hears things differently. But if we were considering things entirely from an accessibility perspective I’m sure we’d need to lose the music. I appreciate it’s not necessarily the norm for podcasts.

I think a good subject to discuss is "What's the one thing about PSBs past that, in hindsight, you would have tweaked?"


For me, it would have been the release date of What have I done to deserve this?, either two weeks prior to it's actual release or delayed by three more weeks so that it didn't meet the juggernaught that was Rick Astley's Never Gonna.... and possibly got to number one.

In the latest of our album deep-dives, we rewind life’s cassette to summer 1987 to set the scene for the arrival of Actually.

My teenage diary shines new light on the headlines and music charts of the day, before the album’s upfront singles are comprehensively unpacked, with a little help from Jonathan King (boo!) and Ed the Duck (hurrah!).

After deconstructing the sleeve and mourning the memorabilia we’ve lost to Pet Shop Boys heaven over the decades, it’s fantasy setlist time, with Chris pitching his ideas for the Actually tour which never actually happened.
