I wasn't a regular TOTP viewer by this stage and I was flicking through some of the episodes around this time on iPlayer...bloody hell, Erasure really had gone down the dumper by the time of Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me. It looks and sounds like a completely different band! PSB may have been repeating themselves by this stage but at least they were distinctly themselves. It just shows how out of step both groups were after the Britpop phenomenon, ten years since their imperial heyday.
The climate was against fey or gay synth pop. It was also anti-intellectual. By 1997, Britpop and lad culture had peaked, foppishness was only really tolerated if you were the rampantly heterosexual beyond-all-doubt Jarvis, and he was just about the limit of intellectualism too - if drug-taking was your thing. Technology had democratised, but electronic music was defined by drugs and lad culture - hence, the Prodigy and Firestarter (which was far more belligerently cartoonish and parochial than Charly-era rave Prodigy ever could be).

A Red Letter Day is one of the best Pet Shop Boys songs of the 1990s, but its production diminished it, perceived, as it was, as a Go West rewrite and a clunky sub-euro Gina G simulacrum. Regardless, Pet Shop Boys were effectively living out their own real-life version of Discoteca, not speaking the language of the time and wandering lost in a hellscape of TFI Friday, Shed Seven, Kula Shaker, Ocean Colour Scene, Louis Walsh, and CD:UK. Going "Latin" three years before it was fashionable was them being ahead of their time and simultaneously behind the times.

As for Erasure, their commercial demise was shocking, by comparison. While Neil and Chris may have been plummeting from 9 to 42 in the singles charts, they were at least still regularly cracking the top 10. Andy and Vince wouldn't see the top 10 in the 1990s again after Run to the Sun in 1994 - a mere two years after their annus mirabilis. I liked Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me. In fact, I liked a lot of their dumper singles in the 1990s, but they had absolutely nothing new to say musically or lyrically. By this point, their pop lexicon seemed to consist of three words: "ocean", "motion", and "emotion".

I don't expect pop musicians to radically change their sound as they age. A style is a calling card. But the lyricist has to have something to say if the musical style remains consistent - which it does, by and large, for most great pop acts, whether they are Abba, Pet Shop Boys, or Erasure. The difference was, Abba had the songs - the lyrics to tell different tales. Neil Tennant is worth the price of any Pet Shop Boys album alone, if only for his turn of phrase or ability to fashion compelling empathetic character studies even if he is no longer of the zeitgeist (who is at 70?). Andy Bell? Well, he has MOE. Motion, Ocean, Emotion.

I still like the occasional Erasure single post their commercial heyday, mind. Breathe is superbly simple and effective and I Could Fall In Love With You is weirdly compelling. But they ran out of road commercially and artistically after they started elongating their songs in the mid-1990s as an experiment. That gave us interesting singles like Stay With Me that were commercially unappealing. After that? Let's not speak of Freedom...

Somewhere performed in a similar way to Red Letter Day. At that point the loyal fans were the only ones getting their songs on the charts.

The difference with Erasure is that I think they sort of wanted to self destruct and become less popular. Also their loyal fans were not in the same numbers as PSB. The ABBA ep was the end of their mainstream success. PSB fought valiantly on for a few more years on the charts.

This is fantastic writing. You should do a book or a blog or a mag or a pod.

Watching these recent episodes, Is just a reminder of how much denial I was in, that they weren’t a big chart act anymore. When White Town reached Number 1, and the Melody Maker started to champion the new Romo scene, I was convinced a Synth-pop revival was just around the corner.

They had two more Number One albums after the ABBA EP (yes I know one of them was a Hits collection).

Always did ok in the US. It reached number 20 there.
Also surprisingly, one of their 1997 down the dumper singles, was their fourth biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In My Arms, reached number 55.

These repeats are still going. I find myself fast forwarding through them far more than the 70s and 80s ones. The show has essentially broken its cardinal rules by now so songs that are dropping down the chart get shown and often the same songs get shown over and over again. Still, it's refreshing to see the garish innocence of the late 90s before 9/11. Anyway, I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more was on tonight, rather amusingly introduced by Jayne Middlemiss as a song title nearly as long as their career...27 years ago.

I remember that performance. Stunning. In every sense. The track was brilliant, but the audience hadn't a notion of what to make of the two Manga characters in frightwigs. This was probably my favourite TOTP appearance of theirs in the 1990s. They were so...weirdly unusual in comparison to what else was on that show that they might as well have been early amphibians clambering onto a beach having emerged from an ocean of Carboniferous-era pop tadpoles.

Which reminds me to update the Track-by-Track thread...

We are into the Nightlife era now - last week's edition was 'I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Anymore' in the studio with the 'wigs' :D

I was waiting for it and wondered why it was not shown. At this rate they won't be able to show many TOTP episodes in a decades time (if they ever get shown again or BBC4 gets the axe). I remember that so called 'health' article in one newspaper
What was the Chris’ health decline speculation about?

It was in a Sunday tabloid newspaper and because he was sitting down they speculated that he was unwell...along with some recent photos at the time.

Actually its because Chris wanted to do even less in a performance  standing still had been done already, so sitting still was the next logical step

Anyway it'll be 'New York City Boy' on TOTP 1999 in a few weeks
