In the PSB Versus America book, Neil is livid after Chris walks off The Tonight Show and leaves the TV studio. He gets back to the hotel - Chris is nowhere to be found - and is quite despondent. Chris Heath writes something like "I have never heard him talk like this before" and seems genuinely concerned that Neil has had enough and wants to call it a day.
Since then, N&C have alluded in interviews that the Performance period was stressful because it was such a complicated show to tour. Actually, I remember being at the stage door of the Birmingham NEC in June 1991 and a guard saying that N&C had had an argument and were in separate dressing rooms. If the security guard was telling the truth, that is!
Chris also said in an early issue of Literally (1992-ish) that he and Neil had made a conscious decision to spend less time together because they realised their friendship was beginning to suffer, which was a surprisingly candid thing for him to say.
Aha - found a link!:

Chris went there and the camera crew wasn´t there and he waited so long that he walked off.Electronic Dave wrote:On a related note didn't Chris also storm off the video shoot for Kings Cross (later used in the Rent video?) or didn't he just not turn up...actually that maybe because nobody was there and he went home...
Nice to read this topic.

Chris:
-I´ve got a 12-inch plonker.

Interesting, I didn't know about it.FantasticVoyage wrote: ... Tonight Show where Chris walked off stage in the middle of "Where The Streets..." ...
Never seen that before, although I knew of the story - it's legendary. Thanks for uploading.
I can see why Chris walked, there was a couple of long shots that had him in, the rest was Neil, the backing singers and the dancers.
The awful thing for Chris is that the music didn't suffer when he went!

I think 1991 was a really testing time for PSB and that incident really summed it up. Behaviour had not been nearly as succsessful as previous albums so they were having to do a lot of promotion- things were not nearly as easy. I think to do such an ambitious and complicated tour in those conditions was bound to be testing.
What the Tonight Show incident is testament to is Neil's ability to keep his temper. If you read PSB vs America it's amazing how he holds it together where many other artists would have jumped off on one. The impression i get is that the situation was quite volatile (or certainly Chris and Pete Andreas seemed to be) but Neil was able to take a step back and let it pass. Had he not, it could have been way more serious
Think i might dig out my copy of PSB vs America again you know...
