The irony is that if Chris had stayed for the interview it would have been blindingly obvious that they were a duo. And he could even of made a jab at the production values. But still, what a fab walk off

In the PSB Versus America book, Neil is livid after Chris walks off The Tonight Show and leaves the TV studio. He gets back to the hotel - Chris is nowhere to be found - and is quite despondent. Chris Heath writes something like "I have never heard him talk like this before" and seems genuinely concerned that Neil has had enough and wants to call it a day.
Since then, N&C have alluded in interviews that the Performance period was stressful because it was such a complicated show to tour. Actually, I remember being at the stage door of the Birmingham NEC in June 1991 and a guard saying that N&C had had an argument and were in separate dressing rooms. If the security guard was telling the truth, that is!
Chris also said in an early issue of Literally (1992-ish) that he and Neil had made a conscious decision to spend less time together because they realised their friendship was beginning to suffer, which was a surprisingly candid thing for him to say.
Aha - found a link!:

They always have seperate dressing rooms

Not much of a shocker, that one

I feel alot worse for the dancer who screwed up the routine than I do for chris.
you just know every now and then that dancer has flashbacks to that moment like some cop reliving some violent shootout where his partner got killed

I was actually surprised no one had this.
Anyhow, I am working with themgmt to redo the file in a better quality transfer, so hopefully we will make it available in the near future.

Chris went there and the camera crew wasn´t there and he waited so long that he walked off.
Nice to read this topic.

I love Neil´s face when he watches Chris walking off the stage.

Interesting, I didn't know about it.

Never seen that before, although I knew of the story - it's legendary. Thanks for uploading.
I can see why Chris walked, there was a couple of long shots that had him in, the rest was Neil, the backing singers and the dancers.
The awful thing for Chris is that the music didn't suffer when he went!

At the risk of repeating myself, what a spoilt brat!
At least one of the PSB knows the meaning of
professionalism. Hats off to Neil for keeping it together. Feel really sorry for him. Chris undeniably deserved a smack there.

I think 1991 was a really testing time for PSB and that incident really summed it up. Behaviour had not been nearly as succsessful as previous albums so they were having to do a lot of promotion- things were not nearly as easy. I think to do such an ambitious and complicated tour in those conditions was bound to be testing.
What the Tonight Show incident is testament to is Neil's ability to keep his temper. If you read PSB vs America it's amazing how he holds it together where many other artists would have jumped off on one. The impression i get is that the situation was quite volatile (or certainly Chris and Pete Andreas seemed to be) but Neil was able to take a step back and let it pass. Had he not, it could have been way more serious
Think i might dig out my copy of PSB vs America again you know...

I do not care of Chris walked off, he had good reason to do that. It looked really bad they did not have the camera on him. Just like they said in PSB vs America, if you were not familiar with PSB, you would think it was only Neil and the backup singers with the dancers who fumbled.

The whole performance was a disaster. But the interview was good.
I think I gotta read the book again also.

It was a disaster and Neil was livid about it. Well, it was their first time on "The Tonight Show" and that is a huge major talk show in America. Were they banned from ever playing there again?
