At 98 is Discography which sold 2092 copies last week, bringing its total 339,497 during the 93 weeks its been in the charts.
I'm with stupid is at 93 in the singles chart having sold 853 copies last week, bringing its total to 22,857
I'm with stupid still selling? and that total figure is quite good...
The CELL by Stephen King instantly hit number 1 in New York Times Bookseller Lists selling well over 200 thousand copies in three weeks. This affirms my opinion: People really need an occassional good horror read...

So Fundamental sold already twice as much better as Release did! Right?lucienchardon wrote:Here's a comparison of how the last three albums have sold on the first week....

Albums - 03.06.06: Pet Shop Boys
Extending their albums chart career to more than 20 years, The Pet Shop Boys' latest set Fundamental debuts at number five on sales of 26,492 copies. Their 12th Top 10 album, its first single I'm With Stupid reached number eight last month, charting as high as any Pet Shop Boys single in the past decade. Fundamental had a better first week than the Pet Shop Boys' last two albums of new material - Release debuted at number seven on sales of 18,008 in 2002 and Nightlife also debuted at number seven on sales of 17,038 in 1999.
Think this is vey good news!

No. How times change!!! Back then, Bilingual's sales figure was said to be "lousy and disappointing" and Neil had blamed it on this and that and tit..Now I am sure he will be more than happy if Fundamental gets close to Bilingual...nickname wrote:Is there a possibility of making better than Bilingual and sell more copies?.

I feel this is a misleading manipulation of the truth.which i have also seen when discussing a peer group's( from the same era of PSB who have somewhat comparible range of modern chart success) latest comeback last year......Undertaker wrote:

It's performed brilliantly all over Europe. Take comfort that it never charted at 102!!

Given the date of your post how on earth would you know this so accurately, considering all you know are the first week sales of Fundamenatal (26.5k) which show an 8k increase from the previous 2 albums' FIRST WEEK SALES (17-18k). The cumulative sales total is whats important/relevant for albums and surely you don't have such info yet to make such assured statements as in the above quote?Undertaker wrote: The album has sold far more copies than expected. As i've mentioned, the peak popsition or first week chart placing of an album is hardly much claim to its remarkable OVERALL success (ALL the recent PSB albums have plunged down the chart never to be seen again, indicative of small fanbase only buying, resulting in total sales still close to the first week sale - given the lowest UK certification, silver,is a shipment of 60k, they'll never see a gold cert again at this rate even if your unsupported...Undertaker wrote: PSB are a pop group who are still getting a top 5 album 21 years on.
..spin turned out to be true.Undertaker wrote: It's already easily beaten the previous 2 albums' sales.
While i agree it is a remarkable achievement to still have such current chart achievements for such a mega long + successful career, comparing how much PSB cost Parlo etc to maintain, promo etc. and the amount their more modest recent record sales have made i'm not sure, on balance, how long there viability to a record co. biz will remain unchanged but thats not to mean the end of PSB just there current type of existance.
Well if its makes such a difference as you infer, then thats not exactly a positive for maintaining PSBs success is it.Are they not worth pushing to the general public anymore?......at least they had the docu.Undertaker wrote:Remember also, that it wasn't advertised on prime time t.v.
Yet more misinformation and spin i believe - see the following link for the album positions all over Europe;Undertaker wrote:It's performed brilliantly all over Europe.

As you can see it failed to chart highly(or even at all) in numerous European countries, the success in Scandinavian countries is unfortunate in that sales are next to nothing there.
Of the three significant sales markets it went top 10 in UK + Germany but in France it's at #74, that's about 1000 copies or less.
The result of all these convolutions is that Fundamental just sold around 85-100K worldwide on its debut week,of which 1/4 of that total from the UK. Second week world chart placings follow the plummeting in the UK, indeed it has already dropped to #18 from #1 in the world album chart.
In summary i think overall and in the long term it is bad thing to give such a misleading picture of the facts, even if the intention was benign moral boosting - better to overcome any dissapoint in expectations now than let it continue further and have the chance of greater dissapointment in the future, with the benefit of also appreciating and enjoying any unexpected success more.If you want evidence of the disaster misinformation and spin can cause just look at Blair and his 'Government' now !

Re: Here we go yet AGAIN...another forum another time..
Well i think it's performed okay as it has outsold their previous 2 studio albums so far despite PSB getting older in that time. The simple fact is that at their age they aren't going to appeal to the masses anymore and so a top 5 position regardless of a huge drop the following week is still an achievement. I think they will be fairly happy with sales at this point as they aren't expecting it to go platinum or anything.reality_check wrote:I feel this is a misleading manipulation of the truth.which i have also seen when discussing a peer group's( from the same era of PSB who have somewhat comparible range of modern chart success) latest comeback last year......Undertaker wrote:

Perhaps this is grasping at straws but might the rapid downward scale of the album chart that the last three albums have seen not be something to do with the fact that Parlophone plug the album to death during its first five or six days and then leave it totally dead in the water? I mean, they must have had something on national TV or radio pretty much every day of Fundamental's release week, as well as a substantial amount of press in the weeks (even the months if you count things like Q) leading up to it, but once the 29th came it just stopped completely. Maybe they aren't capable of holding onto a top 10 position, but the odd showing might have kept them afloat in the top 20 for another week at least. Isn't Disco 3 an example of how badly an album that, let's face it, did contain a substantial amount of new material and so was comparable to a studio album, can do if just left to get on with itself? There must be some connection. Well, no, that's a bit presumptuous. There MIGHT be some connection.

'I'm with Stupid' a worse single than 'Minimal'? Yes, and I suppose 'God willing' is the obvious smash hit. Categorically, 'Minimal' is as close as this album gets to Nightlife. It doesn't seem to have anything to say and it's repetitive and insubstantial. The orchestra's a nice touch but the song doesn't carry it. Yes, it might be nice and 120bpm-safe, but what is there really to it? At least 'I'm with Stupid' had something memorable about it. People who hear 'Minimal' on the radio are going to be totally, completely passed by by it.

Because i do, which you later had to admit to. So, do we get to know what bitter Erasure fan you are? In your first post, you have managed to embarress yourself already by admitting 2 minutes later i was right.Reality Check wrote: Given the date of your post how on earth would you know this so accurately, considering all you know are the first week sales of Fundamenatal (26.5k) which show an 8k increase from the previous 2 albums' FIRST WEEK SALES (17-18k). I don't care what you have mentioned. 21 years on, nearly 30,000 sold in it's first week in the U.K alone. No other synth pop band can match that, infact, not even come near it. Can't argue with the fan base comment. Thats obviously true but getting a silver is better than an album selling 1,500 copies and not even reaching the top 100.Reality Check wrote:

Just for the record, Nightbird is a decent album but it's not my fault it sold so poorly. Union Street got what it deserved, number 102
At least your debut post had something wothwhile to say.Reality Check wrote:

So, going by that logic, Parlophone would have got rid after Nightlife and Release didn't sell too well. So coming on here to delibratly wind people up hasn'y worked, has itReality Check wrote:

I never said it made a difference. Maybe they thought against it after the flop of Nightbird. 10k overall after t.v advertisement? Oh dear....Reality Check wrote:Well if its makes such a difference as you infer, then thats not exactly a positive for maintaining PSBs success is it.Are they not worth pushing to the general public anymore?......at least they had the docu.
Number 1 eh!! Fantastic. I didn't know that. At least you are good for something.Undertaker wrote: indeed it has already dropped to #18 from #1 in the world album chart.
