He does seem a bit heavy. We get frequent BBC newsbursts throughout the day on the public radio station I listen to in New York, and everytime I hear that baritone I think , is that Christopher Hitchens? They sound remarkably alike, but i hope your PM isn't quite as alcoholic as Hitchens, who I like/hate, depending. He seems to write seventeen articles a week here.

Gordon needs a Carla Bruni to jazz it up. probably not.

Ahh, your are right Deschanel. We see him (Hitchens) interviewed over here on
our late night political chat show. There is a resemblance. Hitchins is a bit hard
to pigeon-hole isn't he. I think he supported the Iraq war ?

he seemed intially for it,I believe he commented on one of the shows like bill mahar or somewhere else and it seems now he is sort of backtracking on that, I think his position now is I dont think he supported the Iraq war per se, but supported fighting al queda/taliban.

If you think Christopher Hitchens is bad, you should see his brother.....

I do believe Hitchens and his brother have been feuding for years..

I actually like Hitchens - he's never being boring, and likes to lob verbal grenades into any conversation, which is a godsend- he's a great contrast to the dull , careful , careerist drones in navy suits on Sunday chat shows. And it's hilarious how bullied some of them are by his English accent, but probably it's more his stinging delivery, in his rumbling baronial voice,- he's a master of rhetoric.

On the down side, his rhetoric is 100% in the service of his brand, Christopher Hitchens Contrarianism, Inc. Which is fine- yes he was pro-war in Iraq, because he has friends in Kurdish Iraq who, he says, "I made them a solemn promise". So basically, the most disastrous folly in US history is justified by his drunk-talk in the desert once. He's a well-ensconced , amazingly prolific writer and high-functioning alcoholic on the DC social scene, a star there in what they call, "Hollywood for ugly people", ie, politics.

I like Hitch fine, I just don't take him or his prescriptions seriously, at all.

(And forget his waterboarding- his explicit account of waxing his "back, crack, and sack" in Vanity Fair was totes must-not-read material. TMI, Hitch.)

It was, partly.

But I do remember feeling ashamed of this country before she took office. Then very proud on a international stage after. So I have mixed feelings today.

The report also says "But if, for example, a headmistress wanted to discriminate in favour of a male teacher to balance an all female team that would be allowed too."

Galloway versus Hitchens was rather fabulous.

Well I certainly did not vote for them and those who are squealing have no one but themselves to blame. Obviously they wont get in next time but it makes me shudder to think what else they are going to ban in the meantime
