Human or dancer...
Human is dancer... or what?
On the band's official website, the biography section states that Flowers is singing "Are we human, or are we dancer?" and also says that the lyrics were inspired by a disparaging comment made by Hunter S. Thompson about how America was raising a generation of dancers.

The Tennant quote is about two years old though, isn't it?

It climbed to Number 3 on the UK Charts this week. I have to say I think it's bloody awful, but I know that puts me in a minority.

My young nephew is almost 6, and sometimes cajoles me to showing him pictures of airplanes, his thing, on the iMac.
I enjoy it, it's cool. But I was playing the new Killers song "Human" while we were looking at airplanes , and to the interesting lyric, "Are we human/Or are we dancers?", my nephew is perceptive enough to ask - "What does that mean?" He recited it back, and honestly wanted to know- what's the difference between a human and a dancer?

I patiently explained that the Killers were asking a question in an artistic way that's hard to answer-
Hard to say, little guy!, There's no answer, but God you're sharp. Kudos to the Killers, I think that's a pretty striking lyric.
And a pretty good song.
