its most likely simply because in the league of countrys on this planet now, america is the lone superpower and is the one now that other countrys look to and thru its short history has spearheaded much global policy.
if thats not greatness,or as alig said close to the title,I dont know what country is if one were to get into some discussion of the greatest countrys existing on this planet now.
Amen! China may be on the rise, but it's a totalitarina dictatorship. Nor have they been intervening in world affairs to save the world the way the US did. The US are the greatest country in the world, and I'm not even American. Canada? Yeah, everybody loves a country that does diddly-squat. But the Us are damned if they do something and damned if they don't. They can never please ALL countries. There are too many feedom hating people out there and a lot of envious Europeans who hide their own cowardice behind this veneer of priggishness and of "being more sophisticated" than the US. It' obvious why Europeans hate the US. If you're weaker than your enemy, all you can do is vilify them.

Who said Europeans consider the US to be an enemy? We just think their foreign policy sucks.

Europeans love the USA, especially your chief exports of tobacco, pornography and obesity.
I lived in the United States for 9 months and had a great time. I'd quite like to return some day. It's a great country, possibly the greatest at this time in history, albeit a country with many flaws. I hope that on November 5th we will be able to say the USA has one less flaw than it did November 4th.

I think you will find it is overwhelmingly Americans who are doing the allotting.
America is a great country. The matter of which country is "the greatest" is completely subjective, however.

I've always thought the US was backwards in relation to things concerning pornography in relation to europe. I mean, granted in america you cant drive 10 minutes in any direction without passing a stripjoint ,but our commercials and TV seems alot more mild and PC compared to what I've seen is shown in europe.

well thats why my interpretation of what he said was more along the lines of the US's greatness as inglobal position. as obviously like you said, one would wonder why he would say that when he lives elsewhere.
then it makes sense why he would say that, while living somewhere else.

Um, the Taliban had been in power for five years before US troops set foot in the country. And the action was only ordered because of 9/11, so it was/is basically an act of revenge.

I'm not seeing where you are going with that.
what difference does it make if the attack on the taliban was an act of revenge because of 9/11?
are you saying in a round about way you would have been more impressed with admiration had the US pre-emptively struck the al queda/taliban in afganistan then?
I would be impressed as the U'S pre-emptive wars dont seem to be too popular with forum members.

take canada. its big,its a wonderful place,great people,modern,not as much crime,never invades other countrys,its liked globally.
but nobody gives a jack about canada in foriegn policy.they dont care about who is in charge in places like that.
when it comes to countrys that are involved in world politics,countrys if we had to be fair look to what america. thats why you have people concerned about who America's presidents are. they know its policys could effect them.
if one doesnt wat to call America one the greatest in that scenario...fine,but its pretty much as alig said. closest to the title.
No, you misunderstand me. How can something not be the greatest but be the closest to that title? That's my point. If it is the closest to that title, it is the greatest! I'm not arguing about whether it is or not. I'm laughing at the absurdity of the statement - it doesn't make sense.

Absolutely. I love America and Americans in general. Too bad that there are way too many ignorant rednecks over there. But I guess its gotten to be more or less the same in Denmark.

Unfortunately it would appear that you are on to something there. I visited Cophenhagen last year and I am still a little in shock.
One busy Saturday night, a slightly agitated guy told me to my face that it was blasphemous to say that 'Kylie Minogue is shit' in a gay bar.
I think it was probably me who had the red neck at the sheer embarrassment at the attempt to curtail my freedom of speech about a person neither of us had ever met.
My civil liberties have been seriously eroded and I'm not going to take it lying down. Next week I'm going to the Finsbury Park Mosque to say that Mohammed was a bumboy.
