Good for you Ceejay! I set up my own business two years ago and am now reaping the rewards of doing that. The shocking side of it is that I was a teacher and therefore should have been respected and valued. This could not be further from the truth in the UK. I only hope the new government will make life easier for people.
The key is understanding that there is no real thing as a company's loyalty to employees (unless it's a very small company), so if an opportunity comes up for you, then take it and forget about the company. You must do what is best for yourself.
