ok I've watched that full version - it is in fact glorious.

I demand a full studio version - with Barney and that brilliant 1989 section included.

It's quite strange after 35 years(!) to hear Neil singing some of Bernard's lines. Love that he took the time to add those new lyrics. Great version!

Just watched the full version of this, doesn't Neil look and sound brilliant ! Puts to bed any concerns about his voice.
Johnny Marr also looks fantastic !

It's funny, but for a band that had the Midas touch with cover versions for years (Always on my mind, It's alright, Where the streets have no name, and Go West - three of which are astounding records, one merely great), I tend to glaze over when I hear they are covering something these days. It's been like this at least since the Coldplay/Madness thing 15 years ago. Actually, scratch that. Somewhere was the moment the magic had gone. Karaoke to a disco beat.

I love Somewhere. Philadelphia and Girls and boys were great. I started a joke, The last to die and My girl were really good imo. But that Bowie one was seriously off. I always wish they’d do REM’s Losing my religion. It’d seque well with Losing my mind too.

Well, I appear to be in the minority here - which is fair enough. I don't think many of their recent cover versions are much cop compared to the earlier ones, but I do think their original material today is often every bit as good as it ever was. So, in that sense, I think I'd prefer if they didn't bother with the covers and just gave us more original material. Sense of Time is deceptively great. Through you absolutely soars. And the two singles are marvelous in different ways. Halcyon days.

Seeing this posted on the PSB Facebook page today prompted me to check if Johnny Marr was playing nearby soon or doing another London show. Lo and behold, he's playing Brighton tonight (I'm in Hove) so I quickly jumped on a ticket on Twickets.
The excellent Gaz Coombs as support a nice bonus.

I doubt Neil will make it down to the south coast for an encore tonight but hearing this fresh version of "Getting Away With It" made me all excited.

I also feel the latter cover versions have been lazy. They do work best when they put their own mark on the songs but covers like Somewhere, Viva and Glad All Over, sounded way over the top. A bit of a racket.

The Last to Die was good, though.

I thought All the Young Dudes was alright but Rebel Rebel is the dogs bollocks. Maybe a Bowie cover is best when it sounds like a Bowie song.

I'd love Rebel Rebel to have been on the new album, it's that good.

Ok, so are the new GAWI lyrics from Neil’s perspective; his recollection of being contacted by J and/or B about a collaboration with them?

I would say so, yes.

That’s so cool. That would imply there’s a studio version coming. This wasn’t a casual/informal “join me on stage and we’ll get drinks after and catch up”. This was a planned collaboration.

He likes dancing and he looked (and sounded) divine in his snazzy sequin jacket!

I dunno, do I want to hear Rebel Rebel as a studio-based electro stomper? I suppose it worked for Hallo Spaceboy. But I like hearing RR in its full, live, trashy glory and it did sound better suited to Neil's voice on stage. Maybe Neil needs to pick more of the covers going forward?

That version of Rebel Rebel was a treat. Johnny’s band are great fun live, and you can feel Neil is loving joining in with them.

Oh, on covers, My Girl & The Last to Die are the two that I’ve enjoyed being played most live, they really work at gigs.

I think it’d be great but do get what you mean. Just think ATYD was the wrong choice and poorly delivered.

Could someone write here the new lyrics of Getting Away With It?
