I am glued to the footage of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Jesus, it's grim.

It looks Biblical. Acts of God remind us how fragile our existence is.

Japan has been expecting "The Big One" for quite some time as Tokyo generally gets walloped about every 60 years. Hopefully this was actually it.

Whilst I realise there's not much they can do in terms of evacuation, it does surprise me that scientists can't predict when earthquakes will occur.

Jesus. This is unreal. 8.9 is mammoth and that's just been followed by a 6.3. The pictures of that water are horrific. They are saying that the waves are 10m high and can travel at 600 mph. You cannot even imagine how devastating that is.

Was it you Dipso that worked in Japan? If not, whoever it was, i hope your friends are ok.

Yes, I lived in Japan for six years - thanks for the good wishes. The last time I lived there I was in Nagoya - this is about 500 miles from Sendai, but friends there tell me the earthquake was still very violent. Apparently there are 5 trains still unaccounted for, some of them shinkansen (bullet trains). It is unbelievably horrendous.
