I love this song! Along with Party song.

Neil's vocal, dripping in observant ennui is mournful and semi-detached - and that's the key. The beauty of his performance lies in the realisation that as diffident as he tries to be, he can never fully detach from his surroundings and circumstances. His chronicling of the party places him just off centre stage, regarding his fellow guests with a sense of admiration and sadness.
The magnificent contradictory accompaniment with its pulsating staccato beat and concomitant strings of regret paint a party soundtrack tinted by sorrow.
This is the kind of stately social observation that attracted me to the PSBs all those years ago, the clearly spoken vocals redolent of much of their best work, with Neil's precise pronunciation enunciating the contrast between his carefully cool delivery and the repressed volatility of his hidden emotion. You just don't get this from Louis Walsh.
