I still lived in the UK (as an adult) when she came into power in 1979. I hated her. I remember her saying the "working class man shouldn't aspire to more than a roof over his head" One good reason for emigrating in 1983. She was a hypocrite!!

She was indicative of her lower middle classness.

The pay deal of the CEO of the Pru was recently announced. He gets £1million basic salary, £2 million bonuses and £4.4million in "long term incentives". This despite having been publicly reprimanded by the city regulator. I have no problem with more responsibility and harder work earning greater rewards, but I have to wonder how this guy can possibly be working hundreds of times harder than the average UK citizen.

The other thing I still remember after over 30 years was her saying that "women should know their place, & that is in the home" - like I said she was a hypocrite. My quotes are not necessarily word for word, but they were said between 1979 & when I left the UK in 1983.

She was a social conservative and economic radical, she turned the uk on its head....and not for the better.

I see there are now the obvious calls for a state funeral from obvious quarters. I'd be completely and utterly disgusted if that happened, and I really wouldn't want to be in the country the day it happened. As has been suggested elsewhere, the funeral should be put out to tender and the cheapest quote run with. It'd be completely befitting.

Looks like a state funeral is ruled out, pretty much as I typed the above. Still, a ceremonial one is going to be enough to make a lot of people sick...

It doesnt matter what you thought of her, or her policies. She is the reason that more women got into politics. She is the reason a lot of politicians today are in politics, whether it was because they believed in her or were so against her they felt they had to become an MP.
She stood by what she said and did not "u-turn", when/if you voted for her you knew exactly what you were voting for. You can't say that about a lot of MPs today. She stood up to the unions who were crippling the country with outrageous 36% pay rise demands. You moan today when teachers, tube workers, rail workers etc go on strike? Perhaps if the current government had a tenth of the balls she had, we wouldn't be in this mess. Yes she got some ideas spectacularly wrong (Poll Tax) but even then, in the face of rioting public, she did not change her mind.
SHe is someones mother, someones grandmother and someones friend so the "dancing on her grave" quotes are at best childish and at worst, utterley deplorable. You may not have liked her policies, or what she stood for, but she has left a lasting footprint on this country and it'll be a long long time until an MP does so again.

So... Sticking rigidly to dogma in the face of contradictory evidence is a good thing, now? I must've missed that memo...

Would this be an opportunity for Pet Shop Boys to grab a slice of the action and get Shopping up there, or record a new version? No-one who isn't a supporter is holding anything back.

Granted she stood by her convictions; it's just a shame that they were so wrong.
