Something similar happened with the 2018 remaster of "Please" where we got an alternative version of "Violence" with an extra "..violence.." at 1:21 wich was absent on all the previous releases.
I wasn´t aware that there was something similar with the "Love etc." version on the "Yes" remaster (and now Smash)! I´ll check that now!

I´m also interested to know if there is any other difference of this kind that I´m missing here...anybody?

On the final verse of Love etc. (the Gerhardt Richter bit) the drums drop out for a bar on the original and don't on the remaster and now SMASH.

You got me trapped here! maybe do you mean the "album version"? because there is no "single edit" on the 2001 reissue..right? And I always thought that the album and the usual single version (I mean not some of the rare edits on the US cassette or Japanese promo CDs..) were the same...aren´t they??
I just compared the "PopArt" version with the original album and what I see is that there was a sudden "up" in volume on the original just before the instrumental part...to make it sound louder on the original album/single versions, but it remains quieter on PopArt..is that the difference you mean? I never noticed that before...

Is there some benefit to someone along to line to have a different version appear? Or is someone being a perfectionist? Or just random versions lying around getting picked up randomly?

I guess being able to fit things on a disc is the most obvious concern, and less so on a multi-disc release

for me..even when I tend to think that this "remastered" thing is just a blah-blah, on this cases I think is because they´re really doing a complete remaster from the original multitracks sources... and maybe, somebody in that process make some mistake changing one channel for other, or forgetting to turn-of something that was supposed to be that way...
Just guessing anyway...

My guess is that when the songs were originally recorded, a few slightly different versions were created. They then picked the version they wanted to be released, but the alternate versions were all archived in storage. When it's time to remaster and re-release then, it's probably easy to dig out the wrong version from the original masters and put it out by mistake.

Yesterday, I made a long car travel and listened Smash, in flac (my car doesn’t have CD player), through my (amazing) ynoS nine speakers sound system.
It confirmed my eruhS headphone impression that this mastering produces a very clear sound (not the clearest) and it is possible to hear instruments and vocals very spacious. It is noticeable that the high frequencies are not exaggerated (like some other remastered albums, especially from other artists) and the bass is not too bumpy (like Further Listening). But the higher mid-range are playing a bit higher than expected and that’s why the sounds are very clear.

I truly believe that, in most cases, the tracks were remastered from the original recordings and others mastered from remixes from original recordings. The sound is quite faithful to what the original recording intended.

In my opinion, I think it is a great mastering, though I believe that a small bump in the high frequencies would make it... perfect!

I agree with some “easter eggs” aka slightly remixed tracks. If I wanted only the original singles tracks with fresh sound, I would just compile and mastered it my way. Bang-for-the-buck.

What’s with the strange “jumpy” intro in the Blu-ray for opportunities (1986) ?

My Discography (bought in 1991) has always been the length of 76:54.
SMASH 1985-1991 is 77:40

Mostly it's 1-3 seconds per song, some songs are 1 second longer, some are the same, one song Left to my own devices is one second shorter on SMASH. But. Always on my mind is 10 seconds longer on SMASH (4:05 compared to 3:55) and Was it worth it? is 11 seconds longer (4:34 compared to 4:23). Always on my mind has a longer fade out with more Neil at the end, Was it worth it? also has a longer fade out.

Always on my mind on Popart is 4:01, Always on my mind on Ultimate us 3:58
Was it worth it? 7'' on my CD-maxi is 4:26

According to Geowayne the 7'' of Always on my mind is indeed 4:10 and the versions on Discography, Popart and Ultimate are "abbreviated" versions. So finally the full length 7'' of Always on my mind is on a GH-disc.

The longer Was it worth it? is still a mystery.

Shows as 4:04 on my version of Smash, not 4:10
