I like it - it's also particularly pertinant in a song about what factors might lead one to consider a life of renunciation (or at least, that's how I regard the song).

The internet as we know it was actually very young in 2002, and still is in a way. E-mail is one of the early communication protocols developed in the 1970's but its public, casual use came much much later. Was Neil a little late to the party? Perhaps. Was e-mail as means of exchanging love messages out of date? Definitely not, it was still very popular even though by then we had IM, IRC and message boards.
On a side note I think the song has a pretty nice nostalgia value today. The dial-up connection sound in the intro makes me think back to my own 2002 when I was using dial-up and relatively new to the internet, being just a young teenager at the time.
I'd been using e-mail since 1991. AOL flooding the US with its mailed floppy disks was a joke on "Futurama" by 1996/97. Glad it's a nostalgic thing for you though. I got broadband in 1998 and never had to hear that screechy modem sound again, thankfully. But I imagine that may have not been available to you, no snark intended. Don't miss that modem sound. But it was already antique to me even in 2002.
Duff lyrics...as a non-native english speaker it's harder to criticise someone highly educated as Neil in that field. I think it's obvious many of the lyrics people find annoying are still well thought out, Neil trying to remind himself they're doing pop music therefore being intentionally light hearted and silly at times. I guess Pandemonium might also be viewed as some intellectual experiment, trying to mix two unusual elements and make it work, pushing the envelope, being provocative... It's a Frankensteins monster though. The night I fell in love is another one.
I think there are a few too many songs about love in general in their back catalogue, because the love intrest always seems to be the same type of personality song after song it becomes a bit tired. Would be refreshing with Neil being stalked by some fool in love for a change.

I've always liked the line about "Dre and his homies and folks" because (like the song itself) it seems so incongruous from Neil's delivery.

This is a much maligned song. It is a withering attack, waspishly delivered.
The wonderfully acid 'but I thought that was cool, cos I was already late for school by then' is the final testicular snip that bursts the Eminemian bubble of machismo.
