No shortage of new material this year, which is a delight. I'm less sure that much of it is any real cop, but that's a different discussion and probably misses the point at this stage of their artistic and commercial half-life.

I wouldn't usually criticise an opinion on here, but surely you can't be referring to the album itself? It's majestic! And Sense of Time? If Jesus Had a Sister? Not any real cop?!

Nonetheless and its singles are arguably the most overtly, unashamedly gay of their entire career - the videos for Loneliness and Feel, the subject matter of Dancing Star and A New Bohemia, and now New London Boy.

All the young dudes is a neat pair with New London boy given Neil has cited Bowie as a major influence on both the song and his life in the early seventies when he arrived in the capital.

Yes, it's a sensible and meaningful pairing. New London Boy the "most likely" viable single remaining off the album, and I only hope that the new versions of All The Young Dudes justifies its elevation to "AA-side" status.

So we get seven tracks that weren't otherwise going to be released (mindful that All The Young Dudes was already slated for Nonetheless Expanded, and Clean Air Hybrid Electric Bus was hard to get on account of it only being available in Japan). It's a pleasant surprise, as we've not had 2 CD singles for a Pet Shop Boys single since Memory Of The Future, if memory serves me correctly.

Once again, I guessed right.
Because the 3 best and most beautiful songs on the album are Feel, New London Boy and Bohemia.

Even in the PSB doc film, James Ford works in the studio to the music of Feel and New London Boy. These are the best songs on the album.

The Bowie cover version is not very interesting in my subjective opinion, for all Tennant's love of Bowie. I don't know what it sounds like in the studio version, but the arrangement sounded rather boring. And the performance wasn't great either.

I understand that sometimes we see potential in our work (music, film, painting, sculpture) and we think it will definitely work, but then it turns out that people like something else and not even what you think is successful.

We like to see PSHB in videos, not rats on the underground or dudes driving in a car. Everything sounds great on this album. Understated, transparent and clear, unlike Stuart Price.

You can't buy singles in Russia, by the way, the albums are available everywhere.
And you can't get delivery to Russia and Belarus via online shop. I don't know why this is done, just like blocking video clips for Russia on YouTube.
We watch them via VPN. If you are going to block Russia, you should block the site and block all videos on YouTube, but there are some selective decisions that defy logic.

What a fantastic package! Two asides, remixes for both, bonus tracks, superb sleeves (very unPSB, which is refreshing) and pairing New London Boy with that Bowie cover sounds genius.

I'm specially intrigued about the Richard X remix and Beauty beside, such a beautiful title, like a novel.

Wow, this was unexpected in both another single context and a return to a two CD release! And I do love New London Boy; brilliant song.

Few artists release CD singles these days. How many, if any, go to the 90s/00s/10s marketing strategy of two CDs?! In this case not marketing really, but pure understanding and love of their fan base (us!).

I literally was knocked off my chair with delight!

I don’t think the album, as a whole, is majestic at all. I think it has some tremendous songs, some duff efforts, a touch of self-indulgence, a sprinkling of magic, and a bang of memoir off it. To have it at all is a joy, but not everything they do will always hit everybody’s utterly subjective mark.

However, as somebody once said, “what I do like, I love passionately.”

Loneliness is tremendous, an update on the dysfunctional psycho-drama endured by the I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more couple back in 1999. Our protagonist had his heart broken but checks in every now and then with the feckless old flame who is now seeing the other side of such carelessness.

Feel is a wistful journey that celebrates the loyalty, affection, and perseverance taken for granted on Loneliness. Dancing star is a thrilling moment of self-referential genius, recalling their penchant for glorious “moments of ecstasy” that adorn their apposite social and pop cultural observations.

After that, I’m less enthused. There’s lots of nice stuff, but it either touches you on some emotional level or it doesn’t. I wondered if it was just my preference for the excitement and energy of their oeuvre that coloured my impressions, but maybe it’s just me. Human beings are odd.

Some of the bonus tracks are life-affirming gems, and I adore the throwaway stuff like It’s not a crime and I’ve got plans. Sense of time has hidden layers, but I’ll never accept that If Jesus had a sister is anything other than a screeching imposition. But you know what they say about opinions…

That we can have opinions about new work at all in 2024 is the real joy.
