I suspect Smith would have been sidelined over time by the likes of Blair, Mandelson, and Brown. He was too old school for them. Even by the time of Smith's death he was making overtures to the City, so I think the horse had bolted after 1992. Hence my belief that the ultimate choice was Kinnock or somebody to the right...like Blair.
I also contend that the Labour Party can forget about power if they choose a non-English leader. Kinnock was demonised as a "Welsh windbag" and Brown as "Broon", a disgraceful allusion to the Scottish accent. UK politics is very much England-centric. Hence the predilection for over-polished prim Englishmen like Cameron, Miliband, Clegg, and Blair.

Is this a vote in favour of Scottish Independence?

So Witch 'officially' charted at number two.....but we all know the real position, don't we?
Nice of Radio 1 to employ a special needs presenter too. How modern.

I bought a copy. Shame it didn't get to no.1, but the publicity, and also publicity surrounding whether it got played, has been such that it can leave people in no doubt as to what a lot of people here actually think about her and what she did whilst in power. The Tories seem to think it's a tiny minority and the rest loved her to bits. Not close to the truth.
Here's hoping for a bit of a show in London at her funeral.

What kind of show are you hoping? A group of people stealing the coffin and dismembering the corpse?

As much as I despise(d) the woman, no. Some non violent protests along the route would do fine.

Agree, Steve. Symbolic and non-violent protests would have more power in the media; if mayhem breaks out it discredits the well-meaning peaceful protestors, at least in how the media will go about it. Not a new thing.
Sort of interesting, don't know if it's viewable outside the US but. Last night SNL had a filmed sketch that was like a rockumentary about the old days of a punk band clearly based on the Sex Pistols, the actual Steve Jones from SP appears in it. Fake footage, the singer calling the Queen the C word in song. The joke of it is: the singer really, really likes Thatcher. And sings admiringly of her as punks throw stuff at him, c. 1980 fake footage of a punk show. "Oi, show some respect foah yoah Pwime Ministah!".
It's sort of a lame premise, but they do re-enact the BBC Sex Pistols interview as well, and for something slapped together in a week, it's not that bad. Plus, an actual Sex pistol, washed up as he has been since then? Anyway, not saying the skit is great, but put together in a week, it was sort of all right on a Saturdrunk Night Live. Better than the rest of the show.

The only winners here are Apple and MGM. If people felt that badly about her legacy, why not donate that 79p to some sort of Miners benevolent fund?

The benefit is that it's forced the conservative press to recognise and acknowledge that there are those out there who are not prepared to valorize Thatcher and her divisive legacy. Whilst these non-conservative views will always be painted in a bad light by the conservative media no matter how they are raised, it at least draws attention to the fact there is another side of the coin and any sane and rational people out there can learn more about that side if they wish. If such positions are not presented at all, then the media will push issues as far to the right as they can, in accordance with the will and political interests of their respective shareholders.
As nice as a 79p donation to a miners fund would be, it would not generate and demand that sort of attention. To get into the media something has to have the potential to grab the attention of the public. The Ding Dong campaign did get that attention and for that reason it was very successful IMO.

Because spending 69p in order to ensure that the witch's legacy is documented in chart history for eternity is a small price to pay.
Whilst the state broadcaster is preparing her sanctification on Wednesday, the Munchkins report the truth.
