PSB Word Play And The True Meaning Of Fundamental

The knowing wink and nod word play of Pet Shop Boys has always made them a magnetic draw to me, and over the years we've been treated to all manner of double entendres, hidden meanings, and arcane references. However, their latest sniggering effort has probably surpassed the lot.

I haven't noticed much discussion on the title of the new album here, so correct me if I am wrong, but it seems to me that our crafty heroes have pulled the wool over the eyes of their eager fanbase in choosing "Fundamental" as the latest in a line of one-worded carry-on sobriquets.

There I was, ruminating on the obvious references to the Christian and Islamic fundamentalism of our times, and speculating that the title also gave a nod towards a more back to basics PSB style, when I nearly choked on my chocolate orange. To any of you who have cared to think about these things, the word "fundament" refers specifically to the anus giving us the most arcane, yet explicitly hilarious PSB album title in history. Well, you wouldn't expect them to call the album, "Arse" would you? For once, here's hoping they are being ironic about the contents.

To those who have already worked out this, I say go stick it up your fundaments.

Well, there's a coincidence. This place is becoming very scatalogical. That's not the title of a track on the album is it?

A little more research would have revealed that I beat you both to it by about 3 months

You didn't actually, because there's no such word as "fundiment." Image

So in your case, go stick it up your fundiment - wherever that may be.

How right you are!

And, might I add, how gracefully you pluck a consolation victory from the gargantuan jaws of defeat!

Maybe they just meant "Fun" and "Mental", which neatly categorises most people in this world.

Are you trying to insinuate that they're gay?
