was disappointed at first by the amount of ballads but it's amazing how the album works! haven't had this impression for many releases!! can't wait to see the booklet

Agree! if you don't count Behaviour. Though Fundamental would probably share second place with Very.

It's getting that way, certainly. I love it. There's usually at least one track on an album that I can take or leave... but not on this. Each track is essential.

I don't think it's their best album - but it *is* really consistent production-wise. That said, the production is kinda ruining it for me, though.

From what I've heard so far - the production sounds kinda muddy and less crisp then what I was expecting. Granted, the acual release will probably sound better than what I've heard.

IMO, the album shows a real growth in the songwriting - both lyrically and musically - than previous albums.

Is it their best? Not for me, personally.

How does the joke go? "Is this our best album? Well, I will say it's the most current."

Do you know, when 'Release first came out I thought it was their best, or at least most coherant, album. Obviously, it didn't take too long for the penny to drop that it was a bit average (but still better than f*** Bilingual). Fundamental is clearly the best thing they've done since the highly underrated 'Nightlife' and may even be the best thing they've done since 'Behaviour'. Time will tell.

To me, the amount of ballads doesn't matter. It's how many good songs you have and 'Fundamental' has many, fast and slow. This time the ballads mostly (although, not totally) escape the sacharrine sweetness of other recent efforts (eg. 'The Only One', 'Footsteps', both blights upon 'Nightlife's otherwise sleek visage).

Right now, for me, is better than Bilingual, Nightlife and Release. The big fight is against Very (Behaviour and the ones before, the imperial ones, are a different thing. Don't know if best or worse, just different).

I know its so early as sometimes you have to let time go by and take a whole CD in before you can put it in its proper ranking I can easily say it has the most ration of songs I love to any other CD of theirs for me at least.

I never thought they would do a beautiful song that would unseat drunk in my list of favorite pretty songs but indefinite leave to remain is now one of my all time favorites in that style.

I loved both Release and Nightlife. And yes, Nightlife was very underrated and Release is better than most people think. Hell, I really enjoy Bilingual!

Not that I'm telling anyone off here, but the key to appreciating the albums, I feel, is to listen to them 'for what they are' and not 'how you think they should sound'.

I think Release is a tremendous album - whether most agree or not.

indefinite is the only song i haven't heard, but i doubt it could change the ranking.

I still can't decide which album is the best but fundamental is in the top 3
