Literal meaning of "..I felt at stumbling on this theft

I Made My Excuses And Left:
"And clumsy as I felt
At stumbling on this theft"
OK, I understand the words when they stand alone. But it seems to me that "feel at stumbling" is an idiomatic phrase... (it makes no sense otherwise).
Pease can someone clarify the literal meaning of it?

It is an interesting turn of phrase
he felt clumsy (out of place, not acting smooth), because he wasnt expecting to stumble upon the theft of his (ex?)-lover by someone that was sitting right there.

It's a beautifully elegant turn of phrase. It's as if the shocking discovery has momentarily knocked Neil off balance. For me, this is the standout line in a song where people have over-rated the clumsy - yes, it is - elephant and supplicant couplet.
Another glorious lyric comes from Luna Park: "Fortune tellers muse on palms that bode bad news..." Magnificently conceived. You don't get that kind of thing from Beyonce Knowles.

You certainly don't. I don't mean to belittle Chris' contribution, but for me it's Neil's lyrics that elevate PSB above other bands (admittedly few in number) whose music I find similarly appealing.

that is a f^(ing fantasticaly great lyric in fact that whole song is just great!
