but it's still top 20 and the lower chart position could be due to higher fundamental sales, i.e. the more people own the album the less likely they're gonna buy the single, too.

It's about what I was expecting so no big surprise there. I don't know what the big deal is, they're in the charts, in the top 20 no less.
Moan about the fact we get extra songs, moan about remixes, moan about being in the top 20, moan about Erasure, moan about the sky being blue...

From a fans point of view, it is disappointing that since West End girls hit #1, that is equal 3rd worst placing for a normal single release.
Its success/failure though is determined by the expectations of EMI/PSB. If they are happy they have another single in the top 20, then so be it. If they were expecting a top 10, then they have every right to be disappointed.
If the latter is the case, what went wrong?
1. Did EMI let Woolworths know PSB had a single out this week? If so,
2. Why didnt Woolworths stock it?
3. Ive read stories this week that the single had "sold out" at various places. Sold out DOES NOT mean its sold loads of copies. It could mean the store only sold 1 of each format. So was there a distribution problem?
4. Tracklistings - IMO they were poor. What was IP doing on CD1? Were they supposed to promote this along with Minimal? Whatever people think about Elton John, there was no cross promotion.
5. Remixes - I am failing to see the logic in paying for lots of remixes if you are not going to maximise the potential of the Maxi CD. The majority want a physical product, not some sub quality mp3.
6. The video - I never saw it on the telly.
7. The DVD and U-Myx DO NOT work on my PC.
On the plus side, it is another top 20 hit, and if you look at other bands that we like (New Order/Depeche Mode), some of their singles dont hit the top 20 at all. If you take it further and even look at the likes of Simply Red, their last single (the first from a new CD) struggled to hit #30.
My conclusion is that if EMI want a Top 10 hit, they need to start looking at the promotion and giving the paying public what they will buy (that is a decent, quality and value for money single)

So is it the end of third (and certainly fourth) single dreams? Probably. Oh dear...

There must be certainly something that went wrong with distribution. It is the first time ever that Amazon quite struggled to ship something in my whole purchase history and I have bought a considerable quantity of things in the past.

It is not rather PSB's low charting, we are (or at least I am) used to this

It is rather Minimal's low charting. I know you don't like it but the song is a really a good one and it deserved much better things. I wouldn't feel so disappointed if it was Numb or I'm with stupid that hit number 19...

I'm glad to see that Minimal made it into the top 20, which I still consider a triumph for a Pop band 20 years into a career.
Congrats N&C and let's hope there's a 3rd single.

I'd say it's rather an achievement that minimal even got into the top 20.
Not because it's a bad record - I love it!
But i've not heard it on the radio once, and i've seen it on television maybe twice?
Promotion has been dire for this record, so much to say I think it probably got to 19 because of such a loyal fanbase.

Amazon is useless with singles. They sell them at a distortionate price and struggle to ship them on time. For singles I recommend
www.action-records.co.uk - they are much cheaper and have never let me down.

Who was predicting No.2? Top 5 even. Was never going to happen. It's not 1987 any more...
Shame about Woolworth's stance though all the same.

Another stockist that baffled me was Asda.
I went to look for minimal in Asda Tunstall... no sign; and when I asked, the woman at the music counter said she had no idea it even existed - she had to ask me what the single was called twice - and they hadn't had any copies in.
So I went to Asda Wolstanton... and got exactly the same answer.
They both had every other new release on display.

To me it seems very much what Chris said in recent interview that EMI are happy to promote the likes of Keane but you wouldn't even know that PSB have anything out.

I don't think EMI really cares whether the single hits #5 or #55 - as long as it helps to shift more copies of Fundamental. The album sales is where the money is at. And Minimal, despite being a splendid song, has failed spectacularly on that front.

Isn't that quite bizarre - especially as Keane are on Universal?
