According to posts on UKMix.org, there are new singles chart rules effective including:
Downloads can now count even if there is no physical single release .. including any song downloaded from an album
Maybe I'm with stupid was there last top ten then?

The album Fundamental was very successful in Itunes. So, I don't know if it is good or not.

So 'Numb' could have been a Top 20 single the week after the World Cup, even without a physical single? It did pretty high in iTunes that week, didn't it?

It's clear that the incorporation of downloads in the official UK singles chart is a disadventage for Pet Shop Boys. Minimal and Numb both *easily* made it into the Top 10, based on psychical sales only.
I read the new rules. I don't know if they will have any further effect on Pet Shop Boys' chart results. Most positive change is that cd-maxi singles can have 4 tracks again (was 3), with a length of 25 minutes (was 20).

But according to this rules, any king of song (even the ones are not going to be a single) can be a Number One if people download it. A successful artist can include many songs of one album in the charts, at the same time.

I think this impacts bands like PSB a lot, this would mean that Eminem could have 10 chart entries the week his album is released.

I think it's a good idea, as its reflective.

Well, I posted about this in the Off Topic section this morning seeing as it has nothing to do with PSB >_<

I think an over 30's chart would be good for PSB. You buy the single give your age & there you go top 10 again.

The new ruling is obviously to help band who either cannot afford to put out a commercial single - or bands who don't even have a record deal.

if you consider 97 high

Well, a top 100 position on iTunes isn't bad at all considering at that stage Numb wasn't a single and had only been aired in public once. And it did shift a few copies of Fundamental - the album returned to the top 200 a few days later.

Oops, I don't know why I thought it had reached a higher position.

Oh, absolutely! Unless they do a Erasure and release a single in the first week of january.
In a downloads dominated market, PSB has no real place. We've seen clear evidence of that.
In a way, it doesn't really matter that much. Singles are a costly affair for PSB anyway, who in the future might as well sell remixes and "extra tracks" exclusively over the net.

Bit dim here, perhaps someone could clear this up....
So, if I download 9 songs from an album all of those sales relate to each separate song making it eligible for the singles chart. Does it also count as a sale of the album? Similarly, if I download three tracks from a 'single' release, not neccessarily the title track, does this count towards a sale of the single or not?
Say I download a remix which is the third track of a physical CD single, what happens then? And what happens if I download a 'B side' of a physical CD single?
Thanks in advance.
