I actually like his weekly comments on the charts and he does know what he's talking about. Is it sacrilege to say he may have a point here?

"Also appearing on the chart on combined sales are Depeche Mode whose new single 'Martyr' arrives at Number 13. Their third Top 20 hit of the year, the single is a previously unheard new track that didn't quite make it onto their last album 'Playing The Angel' but which will now take pride of place on their obligatory greatest hits collection due to hit the shops for the festive market. The one time synthesiser pioneers are pretty much caught in the same trap as fellow 80s relics the Pet Shop Boys, releasing serviceable and well received singles which sell to their ever loyal band of fans without ever once tickling the mainstream consciousness. Ignoring the December 04 chart entry of 'Something To Do' (which was part of a limited edition package of remixes), their latest single is their 10th straight Top 20 hit single, a run which reaches back to the 1998 release of 'Only When I Lose Myself' (itself taken from a greatest hits collection). In spite of this you'd be hard pressed to remember the last Depeche Mode single which made people care."

Yes, there is a very valid point there. PSB aside, I can't remember the release of any (new) Depeche Mode single since probably 'Personal Jesus'.

For someone who wasnt a fan they would be hard pressed to remember but then these songs, particularly the later DM ones arent given massive radio airplay like other artist's songs get.

He's the master of the bleeding obvious. VETERAN SYNTH POP ACT IN 'NOT NUMBER ONE' SHOCKER!

Actually more like the last Depeche Mode single which received enough airplay to make people care.

I suppose people 'care' about Beyonce's new single which is at number four this week and on heavy rotation despite being bland, insipid and corporate. Nice ass though.

Ah yes, 'Enjoy the silence', then they sort of disappeared from the mainstream (at least IMHO). PSB survive on the fanbase now too. They won't ever be mainstream again realistically.

As superstar collaborations go, they don't come much more mouthwatering than the combination of U2 and Green Day

Actually reading his commentary I hate him even more.

It seems almost astounding to note that Jay Kay et al have been having hits consistently for 12 years now and whilst commercially they may never quite reach the dizzy heights they scaled in the mid-90s, their music remains well received and innovates enough each time to ensure that a new audience is always just around the corner. 'Runaway' possibly deserved to be a bigger hit but a hits collection from the group is very much overdue.

Overdue like another outbreak of the Black Death is overdue I suppose.

But do you exactly listen to any pop music aside from PSB these days? Granted, DM haven't had truly huge hits since Enjoy The Silence, but if you haven't heard It's No Good, Barrel Of A Gun, I Feel You, Dream On, Precious etc etc even once, you're not very tuned in to the pop music. All were at least as succesful as any PSB single since Go West.

Listen to other music aside from PSB...

I listen to lots of music (15Gb on my iPod) apart from PSB, but there is very, very little 'modern' music on it, and I am indeed not 'tuned in', but I do know that it's only fanbase that buy PSB these days.

Most of what you list there(later DM stuff) is seriously rank IMHO.

Fair enough. It's alright and perhaps inevitable to grow old and jaded, although I'm not prepared to go there just yet. There's new brilliant pop music everywhere, if you just bother to look for it. Pop is always new and exciting, it's just us who lose our interest.

Modern music is for the kids.

I got there early.

Precious. One of the best singles they've released.
By "people" one has to presume Masturbaterson means "chavs".

As for that comment in relation to Jamiroquai, the guy releases the exact same song every time. Only the title differs. "innovates". All credibility for the chart commentator LOST.
