Has anyone got an opinion on which is the better? They both seem to have some advantages over each other.

Ta.

Early plasma TV's had some problems, like imagines staying printed in the screen after being shown too long. This problem has been solved, though. You can be sure that plasma TV's deliver great picture quality. I don't know about LCD TV's.
Cheers. I had a read up about both and read about the images staying on the screen with a Plasma but it seems they have been improved. LCD t.v's don't seem to have the greatest picture from what i've just seen in the shop. So i think i'll go Plasma.

LCDs are the same technology as our computer screens.
So they show the picture a little better when there is sunlight around.
And are good if you want to plug a computer or game console in.

Plasma have a warmer picture and are better at night.

Both use the same amount of power. But don't mention GW.

The biggest difference is cost. Plasma is less expensive to make bigger screens.
So there are not a lot of LCDs over 42".

If you want a small screen for daytime/kitchen viewing get an LCD.

I wanted a big screen, best for night viewing, at least cost, so I have a plasma.

Minor faults in both, like burn in for plasma or dead pixels for LCD are more
or less, solved problems.

Well some of the problems aren't completely solved. I got a Plasma back in May of this year and I had a friend who got a Plasma a couple months before. His is Panasonic and mine is Pioneer. Borth are 42" screens and we've both had experince with "After image" or burn in as it's also called, although burn-in means it's permanent and after-image isn't. You do have to be careful about keeping a static image up on the screen of a Plasma for long. When i pause live TV or DVR shows and DVDs I usually then turn the TV off. I did have a problem when I was playing PS2 on it for a couple of hours, i could see the fixed map still retaining the image after I turned it off. Fortunately I left the tv on regular tv and after about a 1 day it was gone so. Apparently though after-image is not as bad on the newer ones but I think you still need to worry about it.

Having said that I still would have bought the plasma because the picture is amazing on HD programs and even DVD's look pretty good.

There's one other downside to LCDs too. They are a bit slower than plasma to create images so if there's fast action on the screen you tend to know the screen lagging a big or what they call "artifacts" that Plasma screens don't have problems with. If you have an laptop and every played DVD's on it you may have noticed that if there was fast moving action and stuff going on. I think they've been getting much better about that though so the newer LCD's may be ok now.

You can only watch the Chris Lowe at Home channel on a new TV.

Was going to order a new TV today

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-KDL-70X350 ... GW839D0YQX

but the stingy gits at Amazon wouldn't give me free delivery, so they've lost that sale ..... :P

Seriously though, how can you justify paying that for a TV ???

Well that looks like it's for a home movie theater. If you plan on building one in your house I'm guessing that the TV is probably is pocket change compared to the whole project.

We ordered an LCD and were so horrified by the picture quality we sent it back thinking it was faulty. Plasma is FAR superior!

Cheers for the info. Same as you, Transforce. I got a 37 inch LCD and sent it back. It wouldn't tune in properly anyway but the picture was different on every channel. Football was terrible to watch.

Just got a Hitatchi 42 inch Plasma. 650 quid, so not a bad price. Not set it up yet though.

From my friends at Best Buy and Circuit City, Hitachi is not a good investment, hopefully it works for you.

I went for 42" HP LCD's because of the illumination at home, just perfect.
