its a very odd thing to be happy about unless you own stock in blu ray or something.cause as a regular consumer what it comes down to for me is ...you, me, the consumer have to start re buying all our favorite movies everytime there is a new colored light involved. and you fall for it while somehow thinking its a victory. not for the movie buying public.who owns scarface in 4 different platforms.

Not if we just keep a hold of the player we used to play the old discs.

They can release as many HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs as they like, I'm quite happy with good old DVD.

yeah,I am slowly learning my lesson when it comes to technology. I bought a high definition camcorder a month ago just to find out DUH unless I have a high definition player to play it back on, anything I record is essencially regular quality. DOH!

HD and BluRay, especially HD are just rip offs, IMO. Same goes for HD telly, is it really worth it?

thats for the consumers to decide.and generally we just put up with anything and keep buying and buying new formats the minute they come out.

you know, technology isnt going to stay the same,I realize that.and I understand that CD's and DVD's and all that are going to go to other formats and we will have to suck it up and buy them.

what I dont get however is one consumer such as say stevePSB being happy one company bites the dust in a certain market while him,you, me and everyone else are the losers no matter who drops out or is the surviving company. you just won the right to give your money to another big company. oh ....yay.

Yeah what is the deal with this Blu ray thing now?

If your screen is 42" (106cm) or smaller, then hang on to you SD DVDs.
They are comparable in picture quality if you are sensible about it.

HD picture quality is only really needed on larger screens, 50" and above.

The big advantage of HD or BD (Blueray disc) DVDs is their capacity.
So in time you may see your favourite TV show come out, one season
to a disc. So you may be able to get box sets where 7 seasons (years)
of a show is complete on 7 discs.

Watch out for OLED (organic LED) TV screens within 12 months.
Bigger, cheaper (per m2), using less power and thinner/lighter for wall mounting.

THe blu ray is new for me so I have no clue.

I find it amusing because it's something that Bill Gates/Micro$oft backed that has gone terribly wrong. A bit like their desperate attempt at an iPod, the stupidly named flop 'Zune'. Why they can't keep their fingers in their own massive financial pies I have no idea, but it warms the soul to see that they can't steamroller the entire world of technology as they obviously thought they could.

Oh, and I own a PS3 too.

gregf you are a star, I was looking at personal video players today, in a catalogue, and came across the term OLED and had no idea what it meant so cheers

you could obviously throw the same accusations at Sony when it comes to the gaming industry. Sony showed a lot of arrogance when they launched the PS2, computer imagery passed off as in game graphics, DVD playback not working properly, poor build quality. In fact the same arrogance was carried over to the PSX launch in Japan, not surprisingly never released elsewhere. Unfortunately the Xbox 360 seems to have been similarly rushed. History seems to show the most popular format is often of the lowest quality viz VHS beating Betamax, PS2 over Gamecube and Xbox

is this what it comes down to? a weird form of player hating? ,do we really want inept companys who are unable to figure out how to make money? I dont hate corporations who are succesful as its no bearing on my existense.

am I supposed to hate Mcdonalds because they sell millions of burgers? ok maybe a bad example as alot of the food there is unworthy of my girlfriends terrier, but I have no problem with microsoft or any other corporation because they are savy and try to expand.I mean that should be the name of the game of corporations no matter what country you are in.

I worked in IT for 25 years, eventually and deliberately with a competitor to MS.

Info Technology is different because of compatibility. It easy to switch burgers or cars.
But control of the computer "desktop" and particularly the Internet browser,
is almost Lay Down Misère victory for them to control everything.

Control of the browser gives power over the server Web pages.
That gave MS the power to dictate server software as well.
Fortunately MS has stalled there.

But we were not far from a world where (for example) MS could dictate what software
you used for Internet banking and trading.

The same may have happened to music if we all used MS media player.

So folks, use Firefox or other open browsers, don't let MS control music formats,
and please don't give them control of your TV through Windows Media version.

who wants to live in a area where savy and succesful corporations are punished for being succesful? thats what it would come down to with your mentality.

with you types, if its at the top or corners the market, its an evil entity.just because.

do you think the adverage person shares your conspiracys with your wording of

why should we care? if not microsft it would be someone else. then what? you going to complain about them then?
god forbid we get some kind of unison on formats anyways.
