Which is the best ISP in the UK? I've just found out that my ISP 'throttles' my connection despite advertising an unlimited service and I'm furious.

You're best bet to pick one that's right for you, would be to check out the reviews and forums here and see which ones have what you need.

I'm just in shock that companies can advertise something and then not provide it!!!!! Perhaps I'm naive but how can 'unlimited' mean 'we will limit your downloading and throttle your connection for five hours if you download too much'? All ISP's seem to be throttling between 1830 and 0000. Best just to avoid dl's between these times, or expect them to run slow. I've never really had a problem with aol, other than price. The first time you encounter a problem with aol is when you try and switch to a cheaper provider........

I know what you mean "Janet", their version of unlimited is not what what yours is.

Not all of them throttle the speed though. The saying "You get what you pay for" has never been truer than with the ISP market. If you're willing to pay around £25 a month, you'll get a near unlimited service with no restrictions.

I got a row from BT for going over my limit by 100MB last month. If it happens again, I'll get fined 30p per 1GB I go over.

F*ck. I'd be bankrupt. My main problem is the way they operate. I just won't download anything during peak hours in the future but it's the principle that pisses me off. Trading Standards should be doing something about these companies because they don't provide the service that they advertise. If I bought a 5kg bag of potatoes from a grocer and it was really only a 2.5kg bag, they'd be shafted.
