For the uninitiated who ask "who the hell is Scott Walker?" we offer the following clues:
Fact: Former lead singer of the Walker Brothers, whose "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)" was a nugget of mid-'60s pop purity. Other hits included the Bacharach/David penned "Make It Easy On Yourself" and "Archangel," songs that cemented the Brothers place in pop history.

Fact: Launched a vital solo career after moving to England in the late '60s following the break-up of the Walker Brothers. Recorded a series of dark, brooding fully orchestrated albums that were ground-breaking for their subject matter, pure passion and previously unexpressed levels of ennui. Deemed too strange for American audiences, who didn't "get it," three of the four albums Walker released during the period were top-5 U.K. hits. Scott was a major celebrity, with his own U.K. variety show and a legion of rabid fans.

Yet another fact: Though relegated to little-known cult status in the U.S., Walker's songs influenced a generation of British recording artists, especially David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Julian Cope (who compiled the U.K. collection Fire Escape In The Sky: The Godlike Genius Of Scott Walker), Nick Cave and Marc Almond. Today, members of Scott's following include Peter Buck, Eric Matthews and Pulp's Jarvis Cocker.

Most important fact: It's Raining Today is the first-ever American release that collects in one place all the best, most expressive Scott Walker recordings from the five albums he recorded during the late '60s. Included are his own twisted originals as well as his versions of songs written by fellow tortured soul Jacques Brel. Extensive liner notes make this a must for musicologists of all stripes.

The guy is a reclusive genius with a legendarily slow work-rate that makes Kate Bush look like she releases albums frequently.
