I know there was already a job issue thread on here a few months back but i couldn't be bothered to trawl through the archives. So anyway.

At the time of the other thread the company i work for went into administration but after several months we got through it and my store was saved.. Now in mid July this year our landlord was approached by the manager of another company who wanted the unit we were in and therefore offered more rent than our company were paying. So the landlord accepted their offer and we had just two weeks to get out. There is another unit on the same retail park which is about to become available so head office was adamant that we'd get it as soon as it's ready. So in the meantime we were all split up into different stores and i have been working for the sister company in the city centre for the last six weeks. But now today we all had to go to a meeting and most of us were under the impression that we were going back in two weeks cos we were told that yesterday... But only to hear that we are not reopening, at least not this side of Christmas anyway. They can't come to a reasonable deal with the landlord etc.. Our store takes a shedload of money over the Halloween and Xmas period so it makes no sense. If we're not opening for those seasons i can't see them doing it after Xmas.
They said they'd be no redundancies, but after all we've been through the last year who knows I'm not really very happy in my placement as i'm just a helper to them so i get all the shit jobs every day. So i can either stay where i am or get transfered onto another store, in which case they're too far and i don't drive, or start working on my cv and hope for the best.. Either way i don't fancy my chances.

On a work-related note, two months ago I quit my job of three years. Needed a break from work and stuff. Planning to do an MBA next year (hopefully Singapore or the UK). Preparing for a CFA exam at the mo and dabbling in the stock markets

That sounds really shit. More and more retail companies are really starting to treat employees poorly. Maybe an idea is to apply at places like Tesco and asda, especially at Xmas. Even though they are temp positions, they sometimes lead to permanent jobs.

I work for Birthdays, at the moment i'm in Clintons.. I've tried Tesco they have nothing at the mo which is really sad as there is a big one near me

here in america when one loses their job you can file to go on unemployment, amazingly,they've stretched it to last 2 years, something like 300 dollars a week.
do you have the equivelent over there?

my job thru the years on and off has been threatened, so I know what its like to fear for ones livelyhood. if I could do it all again I'd be self employed. even if I wasnt making good money it would be worth it not to have to be stuck working with such uptight douchebags we call management.

or if I was younger I would become a police officer and inspire fear in people, not be a victim of it at work from higher ups.

@Glenn: My home was 2 hours away from my workplace, and i couldnt shift home (i stay with my mum). So that was a major influence in me quitting as well. Well, i understand the job market still hasnt recovered, but with my work experience in my field, i could easily get a job with a 50% pay hike. But the problem is, its a total rut and difficult to move out of. So thought this would be the best time to move out and a post-grad is the best thing to boost my career (and salary, and my standing in the marriage market )..

We have the opposite problem : our economy is running hot in half the country.

All those things you buy that say "made in China", well the minerals came from Australia.
The iron ore for steel, the coal for the furnaces, the gas for power, nickel and gold.

The North and West of the country is booming. You can get very high paying jobs in the
mining industry. Huge demand for mech engineers, to trades such as electricians & builders.
The thing is, these are mining towns and there are no houses to live in, they cannot be
built fast enough. Many jobs are fly-in for 6 weeks, then fly out back to Perth.
The East and South is slow in comparison.

Any PSB fans are welcome as far as I'm concerned but I am not sure PSB fans
are the kind to be "working in a coal mine".

(just mentioning in case this helps someone thinking of emigrating, not scoffing).

You'd be like that whacko cop on youtube giving that kid shit for talking.

I think I'd move to Australia if I could. Quite fed up with life and work here. I doubt that I could meet the criteria for entry though.

My uncle is a drugs tester for the large open cast gold mine in Kalgoorlee. I accompanied him on a few pick ups, and showing me around the town you can see that there's a huge amount of money going through the place.
Mind you, the best way to make serious money in the place is to either own a bar or a brothel seeing as that's where many of the miners fritter away their money at the end of the week .....
