I'm always scared i'm missing out on something but i just don't get Facebook. Just wondered if it was just me....

I was never fussed with it till i got an iphone and now im never off it and use it on the desktop more often too. think it'll be a fad i'll be fed up with soon tho cos its beginning to grate.

If you don't mind a billion dollar corporation vacuuming up all your personal information, friendships and whatever you post there to target you down to your street address, and selling that on as capital repeatedly breaching paper-thin promises of "privacy", making billions on your stupidity and exploiting that to the Nth degree.. other than that I hear Facebook's pretty nifty. Polls and games! You just have to give them access to your life and relationships, that's all. And they want all of it. Give them just a clue, they will go get the rest. Behind your back and without your permission.

So fun!

If you talk to IT people you will find they don't use FB or just have a minimal presence.

Giving away all that personal information is madness. But of course it is a bit hard
not to have an account these days, to see all the friends photos etc.

So
1. Don't have your real surname/Family name.
2. Don't ever ever give them the password to your email account so it
can find friends for you. That is insidious.
3. Don't use nicknames that you use on other sites. For example you cannot
find me as gregf on FB.
4. Don't provide personal information like birthday, where you live or photos.
These can be used by ID hijackers.
5. Don't connect to the FB games. You can't get rid of them.
6. Don't get sucked in. It is so easy to accept FB friends and create and join groups.
It will take up lots of time if you let it.

Plus more I cannot think of just now.

Twitter is better but limit your followers and drop people who tweet too much.
Again don't use your real name or any way to link it to your other accounts.

Always have at least two email accounts, a formal one showing your name for
official things, and a second email with a net name. Only ever use that as
the registered email address for social net use.

Yeah I just have a "fake" account to see others stuff.

I started that way too by creating an account with a false name, just to be able to look around and see what former friends I could find and so on. Now I use my real name though.

So glad I joined, I was sceptical at first but it really is good
I save alot of phone credit by sending facebook messages instead
also you can see what events the local clubs have on etc
see pictures from nights out!
I have found loads of old friends from school who I lost contact with, even some of my old teachers are on there!
I dont get the point of twitter though, I dont use that, just facebook.

Yes, this is the man I want to give all my personal information to. Lovely vague 'mission statement' they have there.

Gee, sounds f***ing complicated Greg! Then let's get into the 30 pages of granular "control" panels Facebook gives you for your "privacy". Bwahaha they are all a joke. Security theatre, like in airports, except more cynical. It doesn't matter what you choose to not show your grandma, FB is a deep-mining operation using your identity and friends as capital, your privacy settings mean nothing, they are already using all of it right now. There is no privacy on Facebook. Your life is their capital. And that's just the fact. It's very very highly unlikely! but should an oppressive totalitarian regime take control of Australia in the 21st century, Facebook will sell your dossier to them for a song. Sounds crazy, I know. But they're already doing it for corporations.

I have facebook, but... it's there is in Russia we have almost the same but much more popular Vkontakte.ru. You can watch million of movies there and listen to million of songs. I find facebook not very attractive. Its quite good but the interface of it is not friendly for me.
