For free stuff, AVG, Avast are very good anti-virus programs and Ad-Aware, and Malwarebytes are about the best spyware killers. Zonealarm do a good basic firewall too.

Paid for anti-virus/ full protection suites, especially the larger names such as Norton, Kaspersky, Macafee etc ... can be much of a muchness in terms of catching pretty much all the nasties out there, but personally I've always used Kaspersky as it tends not to hog your system processes as much as most others.

I've been using AVG for free for years. no problems.

Funily enough my AVG free trial is almost up and they want me to pay for future protection. On my last PC it was free throughout with no trial period. Anyone else paying for AVG? I don't mind paying for a service, but if people are getting it free...

AVG regular is always free.....unless you want the upgraded version that has certain features I have no use for. possibly its taking a shot at seeing if you want to upgrade in which case there is a fee.

I think this happened to me way back when, I'm not sure if I just uninstalled the version I had on my computer and then just downloaded AVG free again.eitherway, the basic is free.
