Pansexuality - what IS it?

PANSEXUALITY.
I would like anyone who believes panSEXUALITY is a real thing, a real SEXUALITY, to explain to me how this is (so far, after over a dozen conversations with pansexuals online, I still can't figure it out).
It appears to be a fad among 16 year old girls (if there are 35 year old pansexuals, I don't know where they are). They want to be into all things tolerance and egalitarianism, so they come up with a glorified bisexualism (already a fad). They all say it's about personality, not about gender. Hmm, alright. Except, sexuality deals with attraction to sex, male or female, more than gender. Pansexuals claim they don't like kids or animals, but what if, say, hypothetically, a 16 year old girls boyfriend's soul entered the body of a dog. It's the same personality, so would she boing the dog?
I do not know the social construction or history of pansexuality. My guess is it came from people having a difficult time in relationships with gender benders, women with penises, etc.
Here is what I think: If you like mens AND womens bodies and you discriminate based on personality, you're bisexual. IF you DON'T discriminate based on personality, you're a douche.
Now, all this said, I would LOVE for a pansexual, or someone who understands pansexuality to come on here and set me straight with a long well reasoned post. I am REALLY trying to understand this is a real thing, but I'm just not there. I understand 16 year old girls have little reason to be into boys their age, boys who have lost all the usual ideals of being a man and gentleman. But pansexuality, I think, should be called pangenderism, and even then, if you just like all genders (male, female, and all inbetween) that is STILL PART OF A PERSONS IDENITY. It's not some totally seperate thing from the personality.
Sorry about this rant, but this has really been bugging me, and some people online I would otherwise totally get along with have disagreed sharply with me on this issue. So, someone set me straight? Or back me up?
