BTW I was lucky enough to see the tribute to Saturday Night fever with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Roundhouse a few years ago. A super concert. The Bee Gees are a bit of a ''guilty pleasure'' for me.

two of my faves gone in a week. Bee Gees are truly underrated artists and songwriters, the beginning of 'Woman in love' is still one of the best song intros ever imho. On a side note, and no offence Sandy, I hate the idea of 'guilty pleasure' and the whole knowingly ironic scene that has grown up around it. Surely if you love something genuinely there should be no 'guilt' associated with it, it just seems to be a stupid phrase for snotty journos and Hoxton scenester t**** to apply for fear of losing their non-existent cred. I'm sure PSB are a guilty pleasure for many. That Saturday Night Fever concert sounds fantastic, did the Gibbs actually appear ?

You are right Flaffer. I should not use the phrase in relation to great music. I have to say I prefer some Bee Gees songs to others though. Robin appeared at The Roundhouse just for one or two songs. There were lots of special guests for the other material .

Bee Gees are one of the best singles bands of all time. There's no two ways about that.

Furthemore, Robin Gibb was a unique vocalist, conveying more emotion in one fragile note than most divas mange in their entire career.

The Bee Gees were genuinely great. They had a string of singles from 1975 to 1980 that few have ever matched. I had the Saturday Night Fever album as a child (impeccably good taste even then) and rank them with Abba as the apex act of the time. Tragedy is the very definition of the "ecstatic moment" that Neil and Chris used to exist for; If I Can't Have You is a fantastic pop song full of the joys of unrequited love; their material for other acts is, let's face it, unparalleled in its quality. They just handed over classics like Woman In Love, Chain Reaction, and Islands In The Stream. That whole Kenny Rodgers album was immense.

I've got a soft spot for Love You Inside Out. The intro is vintage Kenny Everett.

Thanks for the info. Sandy. Sounds like a great show; that Bee Gees tribute album that came out about 13 years ago was pretty good as well. Dana Internationals 'Woman In Love' and Monaco doing 'You should be dancing' were great. As was Lightning Seeds take on 'To need somebody'

Chris was a huge fan of Saturday Night Fever - which I guess counts as the Bee Gees influence on Pet Shop Boys. Plus the were "from the North".

Nothing against Robin Gibb at all, Bee Gee's had some amazing output obviously. But I sure am sick of people like this dying, for in the US, the TV shows just exploit it for tribute programs that get very old. Again, no disrespect, sad to hear. If Neil died, I don't know that it would even garner a mention in the US press. Seriously.

What is a good "early" Bee Gee's setlist, before the disco era? Could someone recommend 10 songs or so pre-1974ish?

Some great songs in there, I think Massachutsess is is one of my all time favourites. Saturday Night Fever was great but there is so much more to there back catalouge.

RIP Robin, you were part of my childhood. I am genuinely shocked he is gone....

All these horrible formats are now in my country as well...

2012 might not be the end of the world, but it's been the end of the line for quite a few musicians and singers this year...

I'm surprised theres not much mention of his solo albums How Old Are You and Secret Agent, which have some really good tracks on them!
