Was in a auction at Christie!s today. Sold £400

Knowing how Chris is guarded about his private life, I'm surprised items like this turn up at auction. Just like his Issey Miyake glasses. I would have thought Chris would have kept a tighter reign on his personal clothing...Unless these items were given to family or friends. Even then, I'd assume those close to Chris would know he wouldn't really like his personal effects being touted around auctions...

This was donated to a charity.

I am a bit torn about this. It is good to see the Boys assisting charity auctions, but this shirt is so iconic. The strength of the Bowie exhibition at the V and A was Blair's own archive. Donating items like this will make future curators' jobs more difficult if they decide to accord the Boys the same treatment.

It went for £500 with the estimate at £800 to £1200. A bargain for someone. If the Boys had mentioned the auction on their site, it probably would have gone higher than it did. This was a commercial auction though, it was sold in a Teenage Cancer Trust pop auction in 1998 so the buyer must have decided to re-sell.In my days of splurging on credit cards, bidding on this shirt is the kind of thing I would have done ! Those days are long gone alas.

See above but this all seems to be fully OK with Chris, he appears to have signed this item... The original charity to which he donated the t shirt is an excellent one. No doubt their fund raisers are very persuasive!

I spoke to them about doing a V & A exhibition when in Vegas but sadly it'll never happen as they don't actually have much stuff and what they do have apparently looks a bit shabby!

I'm just glad they did that photography retrospective in London when "Catalogue" came out. I'm sure they will do another version of that one day.

How the hell were we supposed to know about this?!,i would have definately bid for it.it is richly iconic and £400 is ridiculous,an utter bargain.i assume it was you agent d?!

Oh right..I wasn't aware about the donation to charity..A great cause..!!

I could swear I saw this on Ebay a few years ago. Anyone else remember this?

I only found it by accident as there was a brochure for the auction on eBay the day before

I asked Neil the same question at the National Portrait Gallery talk and he said the same, that it's surprising how crappy the stuff looks close up, or words to that effect anyway
