It's not the first time I read something like that.

Anyone who speaks English as a first language and has any experience of working knows that our time at work is not our own. If neil got rid of naked ladies then he was told to, he was walking Round tottenham in high heels at this point...hardly a conservative.

Editors at comic companies do what the publisher wants. Besides, Marvel never published comics with nudity. The women were scantily clad and Neil was ordered to make them less scantily clad. In short he just made the side-boobs disappear.

I still think it was cool that Neil was a young editor at Marvel Comics in the late 1970s. It fits with his pop sensibility, "pop" in all its forms. I recall the Marvel job bored him though. On to Smash Hits! Which seemed to interest him very much, enough to make a go of it himself. Something like, "If these utter f-cking morons and idiots can become pop stars, hold my coat and watch me show them how it's done, with actual intelligence and aesthetics."

And he really did just that. Like he said in his Details article, "The Power of Negative Thinking" in 1993, working at Smash Hits really energized him, seeing extremely dumb people making god-awful music elevated to pop stardom. His loathing of these disposable popstars and their music really spurred him to go do it himself, and better. Adding some intelligence and art and style to the dumb corrupt pop machine he observed close-up. Neil laughed at them, took advantage of the pop machine, and we're all so glad he did.
