Wednesday is clearly going to be a key Pet Shop Boys day. It’s the first cinema showing of Dreamworld, and we now know they are also appearing on the Radio 2 breakfast show.

An appearance on the UK’s biggest radio show therefore means it is likely that they will be debuting their new single. If this is the case, it follows that it will be made available digitally soon after - maybe immediately on Wednesday, or on Friday.

If they are releasing their new single, it’s likely that they will also open album pre-orders, which will mean we’ll get to know the title, artwork, tracklisting and formats. And if they have any other plans - Imagine, Volume, any one-off concerts - it’s likely we’ll get them confirmed too. The message is likely to be “it’s our fortieth anniversary and there’s a lot going on”.

This timeline all fits with the planned April album release. And it would mean the single will already have been in rotation on radio 2 for three weeks ahead of its Piano Room performance on 23 February (a place on their playlist will have been a likely part of their performance agreement).

Similarly, Elbow, a band also performing as part of the Piano Room series, released their new single and album details this week ahead of a 22 March drop:

To celebrate their 40th anniversary, over the course of this year, let's have:
- New album
- 3 x new singles from the new album
- Volume
- A few more Dreamworld dates
- Blu-ray of Dreamworld tour, with second disc containing the full 1989 tour (to give us a "then and now" 1989/2023 live experience in one package)
- Disco 5 towards the end of the year

And in 2025, let's have a small number of more intimate venues playing mostly B-sides and non-single album tracks plus a few off the new album

My one wish would be to have an hour long documentary showcasing how they work in the studio whilst attempting to create and finalise the writing of a new song.

Apparently the Imagine documentary has them in the studio working on the new album, as well as behind the scenes on the Dreamworld tour.

This is actually a good way of getting the 1989 tour out there. They wouldn’t ever do it as they wouldn’t want anything to distract from the main product..and people would probably prefer to watch the ‘89 tour over Dreamworld. But I hope we do get this on DVD soon!

They will certainly give the cinema release a mention and hopefully get some interest from casual listeners. I hope Zoe Ball doesn’t waffle too much and reads questions from fans who message the show. I think we hear a clip of the new single and they may say that you’ll need to listen to the piano room to hear it in full and then release it the day after.

Hopefully we will get a release date for the album and the title.

Then again…

I’m hoping someone adds the interview on YouTube post haste, for those of us who can’t access BBC content.

On a personal note, January 31st is my last official day of employment at my current job, as I’ve been laid off. Therefore I am very much looking forward to escaping my worries by watching PSB at the cinema! For me, the timing of the release could not be more perfect.

Hi there, sorry to hear about your job. I’ve been in your position many, many times unfortunately. It’s not nice when it happens and can be a worrying time, but you’ll bounce back, I did, everyone does eventually, even if you think right now that you won’t find something to replace it - you will. Try not to take it personally (even if it does feel like it) - it’s not a reflection on your capabilities, it’s merely down to politics and numbers etc. Keep your chin up, something will come along eventually and it will be so much better than your last job. Enjoy the cinema experience and look forward to hearing the new single, ok!

You’re gonna be alright

Do we reckon we're going to hear the new single on Wednesday? Seems odd to be on the breakfast show purely to promote the Dreamworld screenings, especially when we know they're going to be playing the new single in the piano room next month, but feels like they should have announced the first play of the new single by now if it really is going to get its first play on Wednesday.

Anyway, isn't it great to still be feeling this excitement/trepidation (haversack optional) in 2024? To be debating the genre of a new lead single based on a single image from a video shoot and the colour of the lighting? We're very lucky.

Yes, a lot of interesting things to discover, new cool artworks, sleeves, songs and album titles, b sides, remixes, interviews, etc.

With all this talk, I'm definitely sticking around until the end of the movie credits. Who knows, there might even be a new film clip at the end?

Being one of the first to see it (at a 7pm Melbourne-time screening), I'll let you know if there actually is.

It crossed my mind that the press release for the new album and single might drop today ahead of the single [possibly!] debuting on R2 tomorrow morning, but clearly this is dangerous, unrealistic optimism and shouldn’t be indulged under any circumstances.
