Duran Duran isn't selling this - an outside company has licensed it. Pretty normal (e.g. all those band shirts you see at the mall). Same as the skateboards, which Pet Shop Boys didn't put up for sale. This sort of thing is good for bands, because it means a broader audience is taking an interest.

Wait, what?! A teaset can't be used to drink tea from when I get my first #1 record?

off course you use yours...

but for most people, they will buy that or the skateboard and never use them,

because they are just items to be displayed (especially for the price of them)..

i have tons of books, never opened, and same with cds and records, that are framed,
and will never be played... just to preserve them.

I mean I've got a couple not read, but TONS? Why? I mean, why keep them?
Records framed? That is something that always amazes me. Media used in a different way than intended. But a lot of people do that.
I'm shocked about the "will never be played". It's really sad in a way.

I do have tons of books, all opened, some of them I quit halfway, some of them left 10 pages in. Sadly there's no time to read stuff you don't like, I agree you don't have to force a reading, if you don't like it, move on.

When I see records on the wall (Other than records stores of course) I remember my grandmother when she used to put plates that have some nice decoration up on the wall, and I always thought, why can't she use them to eat from them?

"just to preserve them" for what?

I've got this crazy thought that we (I'm including myself on this) think those records will make us rich when we're old. At first it seems funny but now it just sounds so sad to me. Thinking there'll came a point in 20 years, when another 80 year old will pay thousands for the untouched unplayed Electric box (instead of paying a lot less for an opened one) I've got stored for 20 years on my basement.

The other day I was holding the white vinyl smash box unopened in my hands thinking that exactly. Imagined myself, barely able to go to the drugstore by myself, paying the first month on my nursing home, trying to sell my house and asking on eBay thousand for that unopened box, and hoping somebody would pay that amount and instructing my nieces they should ask for no less than that.

And then I opened it, smelled it, saw the beautiful white vinyls for the first time, and played them all afternoon while working.

Enjoy today what you got, while you got it! It won't last. All the fleeting moments of beauty, you blinked and then they were gone.

TONS? Really?

The whole Hymn, Obscure, Volume, skateboards stuff has really got me re-evaluating my collection in a similar way.

We've recently started to de-clutter the house - bags and bags of clothes and "stuff" going to donation centres. I sorted through a pile of vinyl records that had just been sitting on a desk for months and tidied it away alphabetically, and was, like you, thinking it might actually be nice to play them rather than look at them in their protective plastic sleeves.

I have a laundry list of things I can do "when I retire". I keep telling my wife that when I retire I wont be bored - there's so much here I can watch, listen to, and play (games and instruments). Clutter is part of the problem - you can't see the wood for the trees. Things are gradually coming into focus and YES, maybe it's time to crack open that VF box set and actually enjoy it!

My daughter has already promised me (as recently as yesterday) that she will cherish my vinyl because she knows what it means to me, but why shouldn't I enjoy it, being the one who went to the effort to curate it?

Yesterday I saw this movie, Jay Kelly. And even though it got really boring and cliche, and we didn't even finished watching it. There was this quote that really stuck. Clooney said "All my memories are movies", since he hadn't lived his life out of his work.
I can't stop thinking about it.
And then I saw this message about stuff unopened and records never to be listened to.

Maybe it's the holidays that always get me a little bit down.
One of my best friends died of covid in 2020, just in 15 days he was gone. He was a strong PSB fan. He had a couple of unopened cds (Not many, just a couple) and I kept thinking back then he never had the chance to listened to them.

Anyways, again, maybe it's just the holiday seasons that always get me.

In some respects it's tougher without kids to hand it down to. Where will it all go to then? This stuff is only valuable if there's someone who places value on it.

well, i have duplicates and updates of books, just like records and cds.. so thats why i haven't read them.
also haven't been in a reading mood, so when i do i will read a lot.. i guess i should add magazines, and
other things to that list...

i think you know about collector mentality... buying multiple copies or new copies... also,
the reason they will never be played, is i have 99.5% of them digitally, either ripped or downloaded
already... so there is no reason to ever play them.. i just add them to my checklist of groups, and
items on discogs... i passed the 10,000+ mark last year. i have slowed down a lot now. but i'm still
getting things. i have about a years worth of pet shop boys stuff i have to buy from the last album.
i sometimes wait until things get cheaper (or not), and then get them.

i have started a (fake) museum in my house, dedicated to music. before everything was stored in storage
tubs, so i never even saw the items, unless i wanted them out. now i have tons of storage racks, and shelfs,
with everything organized in clear boxes and containers.. the rest cover about 80% of my walls on racks,
frames, and the ceiling.... in the kitchen, stairway, and all the bedrooms.

i will maybe sell off everything at some point, i don't have a family to pass them along to..

maybe my friends will get stuff, but most of them have huge collections too.

alternatively, you can probably get an auction house, like omega, to group everything into lots,
and have it sold that way also..

i'm not young, but i'm not old either..

hopefully, my 'new wave museum' will come about...

Interesting thread and some very moving posts in here. I'm sorry for your loss, lalolalo.

Stuff like this is why my Yes box isn't in mint condition. I opened it and played it all as soon as it arrived - it was my 21st birthday present from my mum, it was a lot to spend on a gift but obviously nowhere near what it fetches now! - and still regularly take it out to look and and play. I don't harbour any ideas that my collection will hold its value, I just want someone - me for the moment, maybe someone else later - to enjoy it.
