They may have completely misunderstood the context in which it was said, however, as the old saying goes: Any publicity is good publicity.

It reminds me of when in the early Nineties Melody Maker did a satirical piece of Nelson Mandela supposedly slating the bands playing at his own support concert (something along the lines of "Simple Minds? Pompous Scottish f***wits who would rob Bono's house for an American Top 40 hit") – and then Sun took it for real and made a cover story of it.

Thy're just trying to put Chris down because he's a genius but not their type of "cool music". As for Coldplay I think Liam Gallagher had them pegged.
