Ok, so there is no West End Girls 2005 remix, but what if there was and it was released as a single? Would it be a number 1 or just something to line the bottom of the top 40?

What single would you like to see re-released?

If we use the success of Depeche Mode's Enjoy The Silence '04 as a yardstick, the single would do as well or badly as the first single from a new studio album. So, depending on the week it is released, it would chart between 10 and 15.

I wouldn't really want them to re-release any single. A properly done remix album with all-new remixes would be a nice thing after the next album, but I would prefer them to release it on its own, without a single with a "'06" or "'07" moniker added to aan old song.

Actually there *is a West End Girls 2005 remix. It's available on the latest ZYX collection. But I wouldn't advice anyone to listen to that.

Pet Shop Boys are one of the very few 'hit machine' bands/artists who have never re-released a previous hit single in a totally remixed version.

They have actually, when you think about it, with DJ Culture, although this only really happened because of BPI rules on chart formats etc.

But yes, PSB have never reissued a previous hit single in a remix form.

But if you remove the word "hit", then both "West End girls" and "Opportunities" were re-released in remixed versions. So was "DJ Culture". And was the Italian release of "Paninaro" a hit in 1986?

The only reason to re-released a remixed version of a previous single would be to promote a greatest hits or compilation CD.

I beleive that PSB did consider re-releasing something around the time of PopArt (or at least the official site made it sound like they were thinking about it) and there were different versions of "West End girls" and "It's a sin" played to promote the album.

I think the time has passed for now. Maybe if they were to ever release a singles box set or another greatest hits CD.....

I like the Montage Video version of West End girls. Is that available anywhere as a mix?

I'm sure there was a 2005 remix on CDR but not with ZYX. I can't remember if it was an Italian DJ or something. Not sure if it's official too.

Starchaser remix perhaps - I think it was just a sample based thing, not actually commissioned by PSB/Parlophone

That's why I cleverly put the word 'hit' there (I did that on purpose). Yet, it's true what I said. We've never seen a remix of a big PSB hit released as a single. (As in: Enjoy The Silence 2004, for instance). PSB only released Paninaro 95, which wasn't a proper single in its original version. And the reproduced versions of West End girls and Opportunities were indeed new versions, but not based on previous hits. The originals flopped.

And DJ Culture... well, that hardly counts, does it? That was just a marketing trick to release one of the remixes seperately a few weeks after the original single. My comment was aimed at newer remixes of massive hits, released years and years later.

Paninaro wasn't a single in the UK but it was in Italy & Greece and it was a very well-known b'side -actually it was part of an E.P so partly a single and less of a b'side- which at the time had got lots of airplay both in the UK and Europe. It very much counts as a remixed single.

I played the StarChaser remix out last weekend as the last track of my warm up set and it went down a treat. Its as good a remix as you'll get and the most dancefloor friendly and playable PSB track there is IMO.
