After All (The Odessa Staircase)

I know, I've posted things about this song time and time again. It's my favorite song in the entire PSB catalogue, especially now that I've heard the studio version.

I think this song should be a single rather than No Time For Tears. Don't get me wrong, No Time For Tears is absolutely gorgeous, but this song seems a lot more relevant to a lot of things going on in the world right now. People bitching and moaning about war, etc.

The music is a lot more interesting too. I ADORE the bass sound, something I couldn't hear in the live recording. In fact, I couldn't hear a lot of the sounds in the live recording, there's a lot of really interesting sound effects, and the "breakdown part" (as I like to call it) sounds so awesome, with that high pitched noise descending down the scale, that weird latin-sounding instrument in the background, and, of course, that awesome sounding bass! I know, it's plain, but I think this song is so great.

I'd appreciate your input, especially those who have heard the studio version.

Yes, it's possibly a bit too quirky for a single... but it would be great on a "Relentless 2". (Along with a few other tracks on this album... including "Nyet" and "Night Falls")

A fan recorded it off of the radio, I have not done a side by side comparison but it is basicly the same, makes you wonder that there probably was a promo floating around since then?

I can only say I fully agree with you. I think "After All" is Pet Shop Boys' best song of this decade, so far! And before any sceptical forum user asks me if I've gone insane: No, I truly, fully mean this. "No Time For Tears" is a good track, with a beautiful melody, but "After All" is a masterpiece. It's not only the highlight of the Potemkin soundtrack, it's also a worthy single, since it can be seen on its own.

If edited back to 4 minutes, After All would be a perfect single!

Reading the lyrics, I think it would be a polemic single if released now. At least in UK. Maybe if the reviewers notice the lyrics meaning, it will help to increase the sales of the soundtrack:

I left out all the repititions, I'm in a bit of a hurry. But I agree that the lyrics are quite relevent to the way things are going in the world today. And I also agree with DVTB, it's their best song of the decade so far. Although I really do enjoy the long version of After All, the instrumental breakdown part towards the end is so haunting, it gives me chills. This song is everything I love in one song.
