Singles or Remixes

#1 Post by Markpro »

Just wondering if anyone feels the same way as i do..
I love the boys remixes and extended mixes but am not overly keen on the singles they release ( i think New York City Boy killed it off for me ).
Does anyone feel the same :?:

I generally don't like the remixes much, but then again, I tend to be disappointed by the singles in themselves too. Often find that the b-side (sorry, bonus tracks :o ) is better than the a-side.

Flamboyant is a rare case where both the single, bonus track and remixes are great - and the video too :)

I have listened a lot to Discography of late. That album is unfuckwithable. Classic single after classic single after classic single. No wonder they were huge back then. From 1985-1993 PSB were a great singles band. From 1994 and up to PopArt PSB were a pretty mediocre singles band. Let's hope that the ace PopArt singles signifies another turn of the tide.

Pet Shop Boys lost the talent to release the *right* singles from their albums, after 1998. The songs they deliver, are still very good, but some single choices were pretty poor.

Actually, it happened before that. In spite of Discography generally being an astonishing collection of singles, "DJ Culture" and "Was it Worth it?" weren't exactly single material.
The two first singles off "Very" were good choices, but from then on, their singles-choices have been plain stupid. "One in a million" was an obvious single. Instead, the boys opted for three songs without any commercial appeal whatsoever.
Of course things went from bad to worse on Bilingual, where they actually managed to release three songs without any commercial appeal (the exception being the quite terrible, but catchy "Se a vida É").
On "Nightlife", the obvious single ("Happiness is an option") was never released.
When you add to all that the gems with strong commercial potential that have been stashed away as b-sides, it is no wonder, PSB have seen a commercial decline. "Shameless" should have been on "Very" and should have been a single. "Hit and miss" should have been on "Bilingual" and should have been a single. "I didn't get where I am today" was the only song with single-potential written during the "Release"-era, and of course it wasn't even on the album.l
"Unprofessional? Us? Sir. Might I with due respect remind you that Mister Vandemar and myself burned down the City of Troy? We brought the Black Plague to Flanders. We have assassinated a dozen kings, five popes, half a hundred heroes and two accredited gods. Our last commission before this was the torturing to death of an entire monastery in sixteenth century Tuscany. We are utterly professional." - Mr Croup

Happiness Is An Option and One In A Million as singles? I say nay to thee, my compadre... yuck!

I agree with the rest though.

"I say nay to thee, my compadre". Interesting mix of the Shakesperian and Hispanic
Although I like both the mentioned songs, I am not just naming songs because I like them. I am naming songs which had the right sound for the time. In 1993, Eurodance was all the rage, and "One in a Million" would have been a smash (with or without Take That). "Happiness is an Option" would undoubtedly have alienated a large part of the fanbase, but again it had the right sound for 1999 and would have had a much better chance than the beautiful, but decidedly uncommercial I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more or the funny, but overly camp New York city boy.

I second that. The moment I read it, I thought it would make a great song title. Next Blue Swan track?

It's the other way round in my point of view. I feel the remixes for some of the singles released has actually killed off the appeal of the single. I know we can never go back to the days when the single was backed up by what were called Extended Dance Mixes ( It's a sin, Always on my mind, So Hard , Where the streets.... & Jealousy being the best of the lot ) but some of the remixes of their later singles just don't appeal to me. Saying this i do love the Lange mix of New York City Boy ( Ironic!!! ).
Fundamentalism could have been remixed a little bit better except In Private, again going back to the days of an Extended mix. Madonna's Sorry PSB Maxi mix is what you call a Remix.

I love the remixs and extended versions of songs, but this is only for those the boys themselvs do. :) I almost always hate the remixes done for them by others. They just don't seem to work. :(
