Men and Maggots

It seems that they've shortened Men and Maggots on the promo Battleship Potemkin CD. On the live recorded version I have of the song, it lasts for eight minutes and that's not including the insane bongo part. I think I know why.

If "Men & Maggots" is shorter, there must be a longer song on the studio album then, because the soundtrack and the filme are supposed to last the same...

Was there a bongo part in "Men & Maggots"? I would love to hear that.

As far as Im aware, the live tracklasts 73 mins and the CD 68 mins

Yes, exactly. There's about 5 minutes missing from the studio version of Men and Maggots.

They did it to prevent people from selling bootleg copies of Battleship Potemkin with the soundtrack dubbed onto it. It throws the timing off.

To be fair, that particular track is not hurt by being shortened.

Didn't the live version have an encore at the end? That would extend it out by 5 mins or so.

I have no idea really as I've only heard the live version once and haven't heard the cd version yet. It's just a guess

I'm sure they simply decided that an audio only version would be better with some minor editing.

The "Closer to Heaven" cast recording was an edited version of the stage production - I think PSB were just trying to make it sound more like a studio album. They've probably just done the same thing here.

But if the film and the score go together, surely they need to be the same running time?

Did you get your copy today BTW? Big enough box eh?

I'm presuming that for the possible DVD release the two with run together, but the CD release doesn't have to because it is surely designed to be listened to as a stand alone piece.

I'm hoping that the box will be waiting for me when I go home at lunchtime!

On closer inspection at catalogue numbers and things, this Promo CD seems to be the same pressing as the standard CD.
