Ok I understand some people don't like making speculation about the new album, but criticize Release again and again ..

It would help if some of you were less a great deal less categorical and/or absolutist.

You actually meant to say:

"I think Release is great"

That's fair enough - everyone is entitled to an opinion. We may or may not agree with you. Welcome to the free world!

What's not so hot is proclaiming some kind of dogma fuelled by fandom frenzy as some have already done.

It's probably my least favourite PSB album but I still like it. I suppose I like even my least favourite PSB tracks to a degree because they still retain something intrinsically PSB about them. I think other people are more categoric about what they like and dislike.

I don't think it aspires to be anything other than a pared-down and sober version of their sound. Where it suffers is by comparison with Behaviour which did the same autumnal melancholia perfectly.

That said, it seemed a natural and necessary progression for them to put the disco trousers away and I *heart* The Samurai in Autumn for its' contemplative truth.

Back in 2002 I was thrilled with the idea of a more low-key PSB, instead of Nightlife, which was a bit too camp and had too many wigs involved IMHO. Unfortunately Release turned out to be somewhat boring, and just like Jamie, I haven't listened to it in its full lenght for years. A song like TNIFIL still makes me cringe my toes. On the other hand I loved Between two islands, PSB ought to incorporate Marvin Gaye much more!

Would anyone mind telling me what's so great about Always? It seems to be common knowledge around here, but listening to it right now, I still fail to hear whats so fabulous about it.

I don't think Release is all that bad. It has some reasonably good songs in I get along, Birthday Boy, London, Love is a catastrophe and Samurai in Autumn. The problem is that those are not nearly good enough to make up for the fact that the remaining five songs are either downright bad or just not up to scratch for a PSB album.

The point is that the expectations are always so very high, and often they have actually managed to live up to them or even surpass them. When the album came out, I remember that most of us seemed to rather like it, but after a year or two it has found a place near the bottom of most people's favourite PSB album lists.

I've gotta agree with you on all three counts ther Joemoz!
