No thats a myth and John had a couple of number 1's before he was shot dead and quite a few after thats not bad for a solo career more than lame duck Gary Barlow...where is he working is it Big Mac.
Considering he was worth 10 million quid when Take That split and he's still a rather successful pop writer e.g he wrote Blue's Guilty which got to #4 in the UK, I think it'll be a while till he applies for your job.
By the way, the last 5 Lennon singles before he was shot had all missed the UK Top-20 with the exception of Imagine which originally got to #6.
