what's weird is a lot of the dance records that chart are generic euro trance tripe which still seems to find an audience (under 10s most likely). The death of the superstar dj is a great thing, it just got so irritating the self-love and champagne lifestyle and people getting ripped off. What seems to be good is that many of the people who stick with dance music are doing it out of a love of and interest in the genre and that can only help creativity. In terms of electro clash-y type stuff whilst on its own it never crossed over into the mainstream it was adopted by various 'pop' songwriters, one needs only listen to Rachel Stevens, Girls Aloud, Kylie et al to identify elementsjamie1978 wrote:Oh, and dance music is far from dead - go on a night out in any urban centre, enter any club, and what to do you hear?
Its simply an evolving art form. House and trance are dead. Superstar DJ's are dead. These are both good things.
Time for mixing
Still waiting to hear the Adam Freeland, Manhattan Clique and Axwell mixes of Integral.

That's not necessarily true. Can't Get You Out Of My Head predates the whole nu-electro thing, given as it was premiered in Kylie's Light Years shows. It predates Emerge, Rippin' Kittin, Shower Scene etc. and was an original piece of musical genius that did not copy anything from the underground, rather the original 80's sound. The rest of electro-ish releases, whether by Rachel, Girls Aloud, Geri, Holly Valance, Kelly Osbourne etc. just copied the trend set by Kylie.
Does cameos only.

I'm going to be typically dVTB and say:
Röyksopp
Jam & Spoon
PSB already approached Röyksopp before. They had to decline back then, because they were too busy at the time. I hope it will still happen.
I would also love to see the return of Jam & Spoon. They're excellent remixes and provided the boys with the best remix ever of a PSB track.

We'll agree to disagree about OK Cowboy, but your assertion that dance music is dead is clearly complete and utter nonsense.Zeus On The Loose wrote:Then you'll probably love the Tiefschwarz album, which is marginally better and more varied.
It doesn't mean much that it may be the best amongst its peers because unfortunately, the whole 'nu' electro scene has been offensively bad, with the exception of a couple of random tunes here and there. Overground success is a strong barometer though, historically, whenever there's been an interesting and innovative underground genre, it eventually becomes commercial.
Yes, my definition of dance music is quite particular but then again, you mentioned 'the world of dance music' which can only refer to dance music by the definition of 90's dance culture.
And dance music is not just music you can dance to and there has always been a culture around it, way before the 90's, starting with 70's Disco culture, 80's Hi-NRG and gradually filtering into House and Techno. All of that is dead and so is dance music. Nu Electro is a continuation of 90's dance culture anyway only it hasn't been very successful and hasn't had any cultural effect because people simply don't care anymore and the tunes are crap. On the other hand, R'n'B comes from a totally different tradition and that has been what 'dance music' is in the 00's so far. Electro is just old toss for old people with a problem accepting that dancing off yer head is painfully 90's.
Music you can dance to is danceable music, not dance music, otherwise people in the local rock club headbanging to Bigmouth Strikes Again every other night have to be dance fans or a Steps Remembered night at G.A.Y is a dance event.
There is a great amount variety in dance music culture at the moment, rather than one single completely dominant force as there was in previous decades.
This does not mean that dance music is dead, which clearly it isnt - take a look at the London 'Time Out' listings, and the club pages are bigger and more varied than ever. Its the same the world over.
What you have is a variety of dance music subcultures co-existing, and on occasion blending into each other. In this respect, dance music culture is far more cosmopolitan and multi-disiplined than it ever has been. Numerous vibrant dance music scenes, some drawing on the past, some experimenting with the new, but all of them very much alive.
Dance music isnt dead - it is more alive, more inclusive, more widespread, and more exciting, than at any time in its history.
Just because there isnt one single dominant force means nothing - its a very good thing.
Anyway, want to know whats really dead? Pop music.

Actually, jamie, regardless of London Time Out listings, the amount of new dance singles released every week is about 30% of how many used to be released 10 years ago so I don't see how dance music is particularly alive but whatever.
Pop music is dead? That's a really odd view considering the two best selling albums of the year so far in the UK, Coldplay and James Blunt are both pop albums and I don't think Robbie will sell a lot less than 2 million albums by Xmas...Then there's Madonna, Depeche Mode and the Sugababes.
