I'm With Stupid (A Lyrical Discussion)

I'm With Stupid gets an oblique mention in today's Sunday Times in rather a serious article about the travails of the Bush administration:

The lyric is tremendously clever and self-consciously hilarious, but not as subtle as some may contend. While Joe Public will hear it as the usual gay PSB love song (believe me, he will - if he hears it at all), it isn’t deft enough to double-up as a gay love song involving anybody other than our two favourite war criminals – with the possible exception of lovelorn couple Satan and Saddam of South Park fame. The meaning is savagely obvious to anybody prepared to decipher Neil’s sometimes veiled diction. From the very first line, we’re dealing with an obviously famous object of affection. The “special relationship” is quickly invoked, and we’ve even got a reference to hawks and doves. The million-dollar moron could only be from Texas,

You've got that right. This lyric, in particular, is far from subtle. Especially with the Hisssssssss underneath.
I rather like that Neil has painted Blair's " lap dog " status with Homo-Erotic imagery. Perhaps this Neo-Con smear - if you'll pardon the phrase - will cut through Joe Six-Pack's ( or whatever you call a British Everyman these days ) pre-programmed view of things & cause him to rethink the whole issue.
And even if it doesn't ___ there's always the ambiguous " I'm with stupid " hook to latch onto.

PSB should have their PR people in the US (are there any?) getting the info on the track to the news and entertainment magazines and tv shows here in the US (entertainment weekly, rolling stone, newsweek, jon stewart.. etc). This would make a great story in the US RIGHT NOW. A new survey just came out where it asked people what word they thought of when they thought of Bush and the number 1 word mentioned was "incompetent" ("stupid" was in the top 10 also). This has been getting a lot of play on TV in the past few days.
Bush is pretty much thought of as an idiot here too, except by the radical right.

I dont think the political angle is one that would really fly here though.if anything it might backfire.people are people and they dont want to think outsiders are calling their elected leader stupid even if they agree.

as I always say I tend to think the only means the PSB would ever get a SUPER smash hit would be if they got one of their songs in a key scene in some disney or teen movie scene and it ended up on the soundtrack. all the power is in the teen/housewife market. I'm thinking of elton john and phil collins who had massive hits on animated soundtracks despite not being hip anymore.

as usual, a pleasure to read your comments about PSB tracks.

I have the same feeling about I'm with stupid, I feel myself somehow in an hybrid situation. I think it is a good single but it doesnt make cold goes up and down my spine.
