Pet Shop Boys are to perform live in the region at this year’s only UK outdoor screening of famous Russian film Battle Ship Potemkin.

The free event will take place on 1 May at Swan Hunter's Shipyard in Newcastle, and is expected to attract around 14,000 people who will gather to watch the cult film while listening to its new soundtrack - a collaboration by Pet Shop Boys and the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra.
Battle Ship Potemkin is the masterpiece of Sergei Eisenstein. It first came to the big screen in 1925 and has since been a major influence on 21st century culture, shaping the work not only of film-makers but of visual artists such as Francis Bacon.
A cinematically revolutionary account of a revolt by sailors in 1904, its haunting images make powerful viewing, and a new soundtrack was needed to both portray the emotional aspects of the film – the fear, the excitement, the sadness and the calamity, while retaining its appeal for the modern day audience.
Pet Shop Boys’ contribution does exactly that. Their complex and eclectic mix of strings, electronics and vocals, projected by powerful amplifiers make for a modern soundtrack that revitalises and re-establishes the film for 2006.
Pet Shop Boys front man Neil Tennant says: “we were asked if we wanted to do this project three years ago in London.
“Ken Livingstone wanted to commission a new score, and I happened to bump in to him in a gallery, so he asked me then if we wanted to do it.
“We thought it seemed a really intriguing and interesting challenge so we agreed.
“We watched and researched the film many times to really get a feel for the emotions and visuals so we could then transform them in to music.”
The band did not listen to the original soundtrack in order to give the film a new, fresh perspective that was not influenced by anything done before.
Tennant says: “we watched the film with the sound turned off deliberately.
“One inspiration that we did take directly from the film was the captions that appear on it.
“For example, one scene was called “No time for tears” which we thought was a good name and basis for one of the songs.
Born in North Shields, Tennant says he was looking forward to performing in the North East.
He says: “I have a house in Co Durham, and it was my landscape gardener who suggested Swan Hunter's as a backdrop for the performance.
“We went to have a look at it and thought it was amazing.
“There were actually two battle ships there, what could be more perfect.
“The Shipyard represents one of the industries that this region is founded on, and should not be forgotten.”
The event is one of the highlights of NewcastleGateshead Initiative’s 2006 cultural programme of events and festivals, which aims to bring the very best in music, dance and performance to people across North East England as well as visitors from around the globe.
Simon Clugston performance programme director of The Sage Gateshead says: “this is one of many remarkable events being staged in NewcastleGateshead.
“The region has evolved so much in 10 years.”
Tennant agrees. When asked how he thought the North East had developed over recent years he said: “we have to give credit to the region, Gateshead especially.
“It’s has such a forward-thinking policy - I am particularly impressed by the Angel of the North.
“I think it sums up the entire region, in the same way that the Eiffel Tower does for Paris.”
