Pet anecdote Apr 28 2006
By The Evening Chronicle
It's smiles all round as Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe gear up for their gig at Swan Hunter this Monday. But years ago Neil had the smile well and truly wiped off his face by a rival Tyneside pop group - The Soda Pops!
Who? You may well ask! For while Neil went on to become one half of the most successful British pop duo ever, the Pops disappeared from trace. Were you one of them?
When Angel Eyes caught up with Neil to talk about Monday's gig, he revealed how he hoped it would go down better than his first live performance on Tyneside.
That was when he was still a teenager and taking part in a Chronicle-backed X Factor-style talent contest at Eldon Garden.
He reached the quarter-finals, but lost out to the aforementioned Soda Pops. "I was gutted, the memory still haunts me," Neil smiled to Angel Eyes. "I had tuning problems with my guitar. The Soda Pops won through. I didn't stand a chance."
Neil went on to score hit after hit - but whatever happened to The Soda Pops? If you were one of them, Angel Eyes wants to hear from you! (Though we bet Neil doesn't - as that trouncing appears to be Always On His Mind...sorry!)
Any ex-Soda Poppers out there, e-mail us on the address at the top of this page.
We have also heard another bit of goss about the PSB. It's well known Neil was a member of Newcastle's Lit & Phil Society, and was filmed there a few weeks for a Channel 4 documentary on the duo.
You didn't hear it from us, but we've heard a whisper he may turn up there again on Saturday night. Why? Because of a talk by Alan Fearon, assistant conductor of Northern Sinfonia, on Eisenstein's Musical Vision. Whaaaat, do we hear you scream?
It all makes sense when you learn that the film Battleship Potemkin, which the Pet Shop Boys are performing to alongside Northern Sinfonia at Swan's, was Eisenstein's famous black and white silent film.
And we've learned there will be some special guests in the audience for Saturday's lecture at the society's HQ in Westgate Road.
I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing - but what's the bet it's PSB?
