Freak Unique: Pete Burns on PSB

#1 Post by Naughty Zoot »

Pete Burns / Dead or Alive has been a guilty pleasure of mine for ages. In fact, longer than my fascination with PSB. One viewing of the You spin me .. video had me hooked. I mean, how can you not love an act fronted by ( in MHO ) a skinny Queen who thinks he's singing Grand Opera to a Disco beat ? So, when Pete & PSB collaborated, I was quite pleased. And, now that Pete has written his autobiography, I just had to buy it.

So, here's what he has to say about Pet Shop Boys ___

On pg 176:

" When I did the Pet Shop Boys single ' Jack and Jill Party ' - I love it - a song about homosexuality, I rewrote the lyrics for my ' character ', along the lines of a Bette Davis role. Neil Tennant's lyrics were something about being in the palace and counting riches and I sang about being in the cat house - with my bitches. There was also a line I did about beating your face and ratting your hair. Neil said, ' What's " beat your face "?
' It's what transsexuals in New York do, ' I said, ' when they put their powder on - they really push it on . '
' What's " rat your hair " ? '
' It's teasing it up with a tail comb. '
Neil didn't know this terminology and he thought it was fantastic.
But I wish they'd written ' Flamboyant ' or ' Being Boring ' or ' Domino Dancing ' for me. I want pretty songs. I'm sick of being Cleo the Whip Lady. I'd rather do something with beauty and glitter but instead I'm doing ' Sex Drive '. It's like ' Here I am... Here's my role ... ' But, hey, it was a great time and an album was seriously being talked about before my face exploded. "

On pg 264:

" Pet Shop Boys
Fantastic - what can I say? Marlene Dietrich, Pet Shop Boys - the understatement of song. For someone to sing a gay anthem like ' Go West ' and somehow emote the sadness of the loss of that gay freedom in the San Francisco days, which even I was reading about pre-Sylvester, knowing what was going on in San Francisco and thinking that must be the place to go. They capture that in ' Go West ' - ' Life is peaceful there ... ' - it's a bygone time. That time went - it's over and it'll never be like that again. Now it's a war. "
I like it here ~~ wherever it is ...

Did you know that Pete Burns is in prison in the UK at the moment? He broke a restaining order banning him from contacting his ex-boyfriend. The curse of psb strikes once again!
Prick up your ears.
